    Common Questions About Crochet

How do I crochet a scarf?

I'm glad you asked! Visit our complete collection of free crochet scarf patterns to find great tutorials.

What is a stitch in crochet?

A crochet stitch is the building block of any crochet project. After you've completed your chain, which is the foundation of your project, you begin crocheting "stitches". A stitch may be simple, like single crochet or double crochet, or it may be more involved, like the V stitch or crocodile stitch. Most stitches involve combinations or variants of chains and single, double, or treble crochet stitches. Learn how to do a basic single crochet stitch.

How do you make a slip knot in crochet?

There are a few ways to do this! Check out our short article on AllFreeCrochet about Beginning with a Slip Knot, or visit YouTube to get a helpful video tutorial.

What is a chain stitch in crochet?

A chain stitch is the foundation for almost any crochet project. After creating a slipknot and tightening it around your crochet hook, you will "yarn over", or loop the yarn still attached to the skein (not the other tail) over your hook. You'll catch this yarn around the hook and draw it through the knot. Yarn over again, and draw the yarn through the loop on your hook. Continue to form a chain.

What is a single crochet stitch?

This is the first type of stitch you learn after you make a chain. It is the building block to all other crochet stitches! Learn how to single crochet with this video tutorial.

How do you do a double crochet?

Follow this easy video tutorial to learn how to double crochet.

How do you make a second row in crochet?

Any of our crochet video tutorials will cover this! Simply turn your work, chain 1-5 chains depending on the "height" of your stitch (the pattern will specify), and continue crocheting.

This is an excellent collection for crochet beginners and those of us who have crocheted for years. For me in the early days I had to learn to slow down and count each stitch. This is a main problem for misaligned work. Also understanding what gauge is and being sure that the first stitches and rows match the patterns gauge instruction. Sometimes changing hook size solves a problem. How long have you been crocheting?

My biggest question was how to read the crochet patterns. I learned how to crochet from videos, but then the instructions were SO CONFUSING! ch, st, etc... idk!

My biggest question on crochet when I started was really just how to start off a project and work a starting chain. This is such a great resource for beginners!

Now that I have been fortunate enough to have had some fantastic crochet instruction from the fine folks at FaveCrafts and AllFreeCrochet, I'm finally ready to take on some projects bigger than a swatch! This collection has a wonderful variety of projects that are perfect for beginners, like me, and I can't wait to get started!

I'm a beginner crocheter so this is an incredible resource for me! The Common Questions About Crochet section is especially useful - I didn't even think to ask these questions, so thank you!

This page is a total goldmine for beginner crocheters! I think the easiest thing to start with is a scarf. And you can find an answer to all of your crochet questions!

I just recently started crocheting and I am in love with this page! It has some really great beginner patterns, but also patterns for me to work toward achieving when I become more comfortable!

My biggest question when I started crochet was "why are my rows all getting smaller??" I've since learned from my mistakes, though! I love the coaster patterns, they'd make a great gift for the holidays!

Same here! It took me a while to admit that there was an issue. I made myself believe that the bottom of my scarf was just stretched out a bit, and that's why it had a slight triangle shape to it. Whoops!

I LOVE the pattern for the arrow stitch afghan! I'm glad I found this just in time for making Christmas gifts this year

These are such marvelous ideas, and they all look like something I could make! I just learned how to crochet recently, so I am super eager to make as many cute projects as possible. This looks like a perfect place to start.

I love the retro ripple afghan but getting a print freindly version was hard. is there a way to do that with the free patterns? I absolutely love your site and you have such beautiful projects. I would love to do them all.

Hi there! Here's the direct link to the full pattern on the Yarnspirations website. They have an easy, printer-friendly version! Hope that helps. -Editors of FaveCrafts http://www.yarnspirations.com/patterns/ripple-beige-afghan.html

This collection is an awesome resource for beginning crocheters! Not only are there a ton of easy patterns, but I've been consulting the "common questions" section as I get involved in this new hobby.

Tried this craft? What did you think?

English and American crochet terms use the same names, i.e. dc and tr but mean different things. I have to print the pattern then go through it changing the stitches. Any chance of printing a conversion list within or near each pattern? That aside, I love your patterns

@Jenannie this is a great idea! I will see if there if I can get one of our editors to work on this. Have a great day! -Kaylee, Editor of FaveCrafts.com

I'm a little surprised that they would indicate that these patterns are for beginners. The first 2 afghan patterns that I opened were listed as Intermediate patterns. The next two were for a more advanced beginner.

Hi I'm having trouble understanding part of a pattern for a hat. Shape Top : 3ch 1tr in next 1tr.RFtr in each of next 2tr,* 1tr in next tr,decA,1tr in next tr,RFtr in each of next 2tr,rep from* to last 2 sts .1tr in last 2tr..... 31sts next row 3ch(decB)15times,1tr in last 0tr.......16tr I know how to work these sts but the patter is not turning out right at this stage. Can you possibly help? Kathy

Hi kmcm244, Which hat are you referring to? Have you left a comment on the pattern itself? You may find that others have run into the same problems and can offer advice. Thanks!

How do you download these patterns for printing ? :(

Hi gailericacooper--Thanks for your message. Unfortunately, at this time anyway, you cannot download all the patterns and print them at one time...but you can print the patterns you like by clicking on the link to the pattern and then clicking the Print button at the top of the project screen. Hope that helps!--FaveCrafts Editor

    good

I am a total beginner and I now know how to finish a project but I am not clear on how you add join new yarn in the middle of a project. The way I am doing it looks very messy and also the two ends want to come out of the crochet stich that I am joining the two yarns at. In particular, I am having trouble when joining in a double crochet.

Here's a link for a video on how to change colors in crochet, both at the end of a row, and in the middle of a row: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dr2ETOSMQUs&list=PL166DA68A2E700BDB&index=101&feature=plpp_video

http://allcraftsbigsmall.weebly.com/craftin-for-pleasure.html I made the crochet mesh roll hat, I posted a pic on my blog if you'd like to see it. I really liked the pink camo!

gmwill....I have made the twist scarf pattern 2 times and it is very fast and easy. "do not turn..." means do not turn the work back on itself for the second row. After you make the cluster at the end, continue to work around the chain. The next stitches are worked on the opposite side of the chain. Let me know if you need anything else.

Easy Twist Scarf Crochet Pattern.... What does the pattern mean when it says, "Do not turn. Work in opposite side of foundation ch"??? I asked 2 crocheting friends, and they have no idea either. Can you please help??? Thank you.

I am looking for a simple granny square sleppers or bootes
