Peruvian Style Afghan
This free crochet afghan pattern is from Caron yarn. It's an intermediate pattern that you can choose to make with or without fringe for an added embellishment. Three different colors of yarn are used.
Materials:
- Caron International One Pound 1 skein Color A (Ocean Blue)
- 1 skein Color B (Gulf Blue)
- 3 skeins Color C (Off White).
- Size I (9) crochet hook.
PLEASE NOTE: Yarn usage may vary depending on your particular yarn techniques.
GAUGE:
6 sts = 2". Be sure to check the gauge; it will save time!
PATTERN STITCH:
Very important that you do this practice pattern. (Note: Ch 3 and turn at end of each row; the turning ch 3 is the edging row.)
With Color c, ch 25;
Row 1: (Foundation Row) Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. (23 dc)
Row 2: (Foundation Row - Back Side) Skp first dc (edging), * dc in each of the next 3 dc, turn work to right side, count back 3 dc just worked, yo, and draw up a long loop in base of this st, work a very loose dc. NOTE: (This long dc (LDC) forms the diagonal float across 3 dc sts over the right side of the work, but cannot be seen on the back side.) Turn to back side and repeat from * across. End row with dc in turning ch - (7 LDC).
Row 3: (V-Row - Right side) *3 dc in next 3 dc, past LDC, count back 3 dc just worked, work a LDC from back to front into same st as LDC in previous row, skp 1 at (top of LDC in previous row), repeat from * across. End row with dc in turning ch - (7 LDC).
Row 4: (V-Row - Back side) * skp 1 st, dc in next 3 dc, turn to right side, count back 3 dc just worked work LDC into same st as previous row (skipped st), turn to back side, repeat from * across.
Repeat Rows 3-4 six more times for practice.
TO CROCHET AFGHAN: NOTE: (Rows 3-4 are the pattern rows)
With Color C, ch 214;
Row 1: Work foundation row 1 of Pattern (212 dc).
Row 2: Work V-row - Back side Row 2 of Pattern (70 LDC).
Rows 3-7: Repeat rows 3-4 as for Pattern. Fasten off.
Rows 8-9: Join Color A and rep Pattern rows. Fasten off.
Rows 10-11: Join Color B and rep Pattern rows. Fasten off.
Rows 12-13 Join Color A and rep Pattern rows. Fasten off.
Rows 14-15: Join Color C and rep Pattern rows. Fasten off.
Rows 16-21: Repeat Rows 8-13.
Rows 22-63: Join Color C and rep Rows 304 for Pattern. Fasten off.
Rows 64-77: Repeat rows 8-21.
Rows 78-83: join Color C and rep Pattern rows.
Row 84: Dc in each st across (212 dc).
FRINGE
To be worked across the short edges of the afghan. Join Color C to a short edge, *ch 30, sl st into next st, rep from * across the row. Fasten off. Rep on other short edge. Press lightly with a wet cloth from the wrong side.

One thing I never see is any reference to a "practice" pattern - so was very glad to see that one has been provided for this project. For me, it is imperative to practice a few rows of the project to ensure that I am capable of making the project and like the look of the project before I invest in the materials.
