A Very Happy Crochet Hat
Kids of all ages are sure to love this Very Happy Crochet Hat! Great for wearing year round, this fun hat also features ear flaps to help keep little ears nice and warm. Perfect for a school fun day or a crazy Halloween costume, this colorful crochet hat pattern is sure to bring a big smile to everyone's face!
Materials:
- 4mm (6) and 5mm (H) hook. If you don’t have a 4mm hook use a 4.25mm (G) hook instead
- 1 skein Beige, White, Black, Red, Yellow, Pink & Orange Double knit (8 ply)
- Stitch marker
- Wool needle
- Stuffing
Abbreviations:
- HK - hook
- CH - chain
- SS – Slip Stitch
- SC – Single crochet
- SC Inc – Single Crochet Increase. Increase by placing 2 sc in 1 stitch.
- SC Dec – Single Crochet Decrease. Hook through 1st stitch, yarn over hook, pull hook through, hook through next stitch, yarn over hook, pull through. Yarn over hook and through all the loops.
- HDC – half double crochet
- HDC Inc – Half double crochet Increase. Increase by placing 2 hdc in 1 stitch.
- HDC Dec – Half double crochet decrease. Yarn over hook, through 1st stitch, yarn over hook through, hook through next stitch, yarn over hook pull through. Yarn over hook and pull through all the loops.
- DC – Double crochet
- DC Inc - Double crochet Increase. Increase by placing 2 dc in 1 stitch
- DC Dec – Double crochet decrease. Yarn over hook, through 1st stitch, yarn over hook through, yarn over hook, hook through next stitch, yarn over hook pull through. Yarn over hook and pull through 1st 2 loops, yarn over hook and through all the hoops left.
Instructions:
Mark the start of each round and then move marker as a round is completed.
- Using 5mm (H) hook and Beige yarn.

Pupils (Make 2)
- Black yarn & 4mm (6) hook--Ch 2

- Attach the pupil to the eye
- Attach the eyes to the hat
Nose
- Beige yarn & 4mm (6) hook--Ch 2
- Round 1--6 hdc
- Round 2--6 hdc inc, 2 ss, finish (leave enough yarn to attach to the hat)
- Attach the nose to the hat
Eyebrows (Make 2)
- Red yarn & 4mm hook--To make the eyebrows you put your hook from front to back and pull a loop of yarn through. You then move to the next hole and put the hook from front to back and pull a loop through the hat and the loop you have on the hook.
- Carry on till you make the shape of a eyebrow.
Mouth
- Black yarn & 4mm (6) hook--Ch 12
- Row 1) 1 ss in 2nd ch from hk, 3 ss, 1 sc, 2 dc, 1 sc, 3 ss, finish (leave enough yarn to attach to the hat)
- Attach the mouth to the hat
Hair (Make 9)
3 x Red, 3 x Yellow, 2 x Pink, 1 x Orange & 4mm (6) hook
- Round 1--Ch 12, 1 ss to join
- Round 2--Ch 2, 11 hdc (just carry on moving your stitch marker as you go. Do not ss to join)
- Round 3 – 22--12 hdc
- Round 23--6 hdc dec
- Round 24--Fold the hair in half and ss through both side to close or 3 hdc dec to close, finish
- Stuff the hair and attach to the hat (whilst stuffing bend the hair slightly)
