Openwork Crochet Scarf
Crochet a beautiful winter scarf with this free crochet pattern. The openwork crochet scarf is made special by its details, from its alternating closed and open sections to the fringe on the ends.
Materials:
- 7mm (size K/10.5) crochet hook or size to obtain gauge.
- Caron Jewel Box™ (64% acrylic, 20% rayon, 16% polyester; 2.5oz/70.9g, 100yds/92m): 2 skeins in #0002 Moonstone;
Instructions:
GAUGE
Using 7mm crochet hook, in hdc patt st: 13 sts and 10 rows = 4"/10 cm
Note: Scarf is worked in 9 sections, alternating a closed section and an open section; beg and end with a closed section.
STITCHES USED
Front post single crochet (FPsc): (RS) Insert hook from front-to-back-to-front around the post of the designated st, yo, draw yarn through st, yo, draw yarn through 2 loops (lps) on hook.
Half-double crochet (hdc): Yo, insert hook into foundation chain or st, yo, draw yarn through chain or st (3 lps on hook), yo, pull yarn through all 3 lps to complete hdc.
PATTERN STITCH (18-row rep)
Closed Section: Rows 1, 2, 6, 7 and 8: Chain (ch) 1 (counts as first sc), sc in each st across, turn.
Rows 3, 5, 9 and 11: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in each st across, turn.
Rows 4 and 10 (RS): Ch 1, FPsc around each st across, end sc in top of ch 2 from previous row, turn.
Rows 12 and 13: Rep Row 1.
Open Section: Rows 14-18: (RS) Ch 3 (counts as first hdc and ch 1), hdc in 3rd st, ch 1, skip (sk) 1, *hdc, ch 1, sk 1: rep from * across, end hdc in 2nd ch of the ch-3 of previous row, turn.
Rep Rows 1-18 four times, then Rows 1-13 once for Patt st.
SCARF
Chain (ch) 26, turn. Work in Patt st until 85 rows have been completed [see note]; fasten off.
FRINGE
Cut pieces 10" long. Using crochet hook and 5 strands held together, attach into EOR st on ea short end, [13 per end].
WASHING INSTRUCTIONS
Hand washing and drying: Turn inside out and wash gently in warm water using a mild detergent. Gently rinse well in cold water. Lay flat on a towel and roll in towel to remove excess water. DO NOT WRING, STRETCH OR HANG TO DRY.
HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS
When using Jewel Box, be sure to tie a knot at the beginning of each skein and at both yarn ends when joining. A small amount of shedding can be expected when using this yarn under normal conditions.

Wow. This Open Crochet Scarf is another very beautiful scarf. Probably because I like scarves that alternate with open and closed sections I find this one too elegant to ignore. This scarf has its own fashion statement, it is so elegant, every fashionista would like to have this in her wardrobe. The color used is very appropriate for the kind of stitches used. So speaks of good taste. Can't wait to start this project.
