Elegant Sport Shawl
Use a free crochet shawl pattern like this one to make for yourself or a friend. It's an easy crochet pattern from Bernat Yarns that will add a touch of elegance to any outfit.
Materials:
- Solids: 85 g/3 oz 2 balls OR Ombres: 70 g/2.4 oz 3 balls
- Size 4 mm (U.S. G or 6) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.
GAUGE: 4 shells and 6 rows = 4 ins [10 cm].
Instructions:
Ch 238 loosely.
Foundation row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Miss next 3 ch. [(1 dc. Ch 1) 3 times. 1 dc] in next ch – Shell made. *Miss next 5 ch. Shell in next sc. Rep from * to last 4 ch. Miss next 3 ch. 1 sc in last ch. Turn. 39 Shells.
1st row: Ch 5 (counts as dtr). 1 sc in center ch-1 sp of first Shell. *Ch 5. 1 sc in center ch-1 sp of next Shell. Rep from * to last sc. 1 dtr in last sc. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in first sc. *Shell in 3rd ch of ch 5. Rep from * to last sc. 1 sc in last sc.
Rep last 2 rows until 1 Shell rem. Fasten off.

I assume that as it is with many shawls where gauge is not critical, one can make it up in most weights yarn and adjust hooks accordingly, and taking to account the "fabric" you wish to have it. Has anyone done the math to find out the formula for the starting chain...as in "multiples of 6 plus 4"? I want to adjust the size without having to re-do the whole thing just to find out ;-)

Judging from some of the comments, I'm assuming that the yarn used in this shawl is DK or sport. I don't see weight mentioned and I can't find it on the Bernat site. I'm wondering if those that found it too large were using worsted weight.

The shawl came out beautiful. When I tried it on it was too long, it came down to my knees. Did I do something wrong?

like the pattern but dont understand the (idc,ch1)3 times.1dc in next ch.do i dc in next stitch after a ch1?

i haven't started it yet, but have made a couple of other things from your site and really liked them. I would LIKE it if fave could change the site so that when one chooses a pattern, you can click on the picture and it zooms in so that you can see the pattern CLEARLY. Or maybe, like other sites, have a overall pic AND a zoomed pic of the pattern detail included in the pattern. Thanks.

This little shawl is absolutely beautiful.... I have never seen one like it. so I will be making a lot of them for people in nursing homes - how perfect!! Thank you for the pattern - I'm thrilled...

This a.m. when I saw this lovely little cape I recognized it. I've made so many of them, I can't count. Even added my own embellishment, a ruffle along the edges which really dresses it up. I think I'll make it up using your pattern as I can't locate my pattern presently. I made several for my mom but, she had her favorite and wore that until it wore out. It gives just enough warmth. Also, I adapted it to a worsted weight, using larger hooks, extending the chains making a much larger shawl putting a ruffle on 3 sides which is gorgeous for those cooler evenings dining and dancing.
