Gardener's Hand Scrub
For a quick but thoughtful gift, make the Gardener's Hand Scrub. This easy project will produce a wonderful gift in a simply decorated jar. Homemade gifts in a jar are always a hit so give this one a try.
Materials:
- Two small pumice stones (approx. 5x1 inch)
- 1 and 1/2 bars of grated soap (I used Dove, but you can use any smell you like)
- 1 cup Borax (you can find this with the laundry detergent at your favorite store)
- Four 8 oz. canning jars
- 1/2 cup water (optional)
Instructions:
- First, grate your bars of soap.
- Then cut the tie off of your pumice stones.
- Throw the two stones into a thick ziplock bag and smash them into a fine powder using a hammer.
- To make sure there aren't any large pieces of pumice stone left, sift it and then repound the larger bits.
- Mix the grated soap, pumice stone powder and borax. If you would like a dry mix, you can put it into your containers right now. If you prefer a more wet mix then add 1/2 cup of water.
- Print off the label (resize if you like) and add to the top of the jar.

This is an interesting formula. It reminds me of a nice version of a heavy duty work soap back in the day, but that was much harsher. My dad used to comment that it takes off the skin as well as the dirt! This formula would be great for caked in dirt and soil from gardening or farming. I am wondering if for the liquid version if you could add a few drops of fragrance oil, or in either formula, some dried lavender. A nice gift, and very practical!

No need to smash up the pumice stones -- just buy it! It isn't very expensive and will have excellent texture. Most soaping stores sell it -- just Google it.

Thanks for the tutorial! Do you have the actual size requirement for printing this label? I am using samsung ink like this one here http://www.inkjetsuperstore.com/ink-cartridges/samsung-ink-toner-cartridges

In addition to gardening and animal husbandry, I do a lot of tinkering with vehicles on my "farmette". How will this stuff cut greasy dirt? Lance ==)-----------

Hi, Diane Marie. You might try using Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda in place of the Borax. Hope this helps! - Editors of FaveCrafts

Been to 3 different grocery stores and cannot find borax! Is there a substitution?
