Rusty Hat with accent Stripe: (knit 2 pieces for front and back)
- Cast On (38) stitches. Place anchor yarn.
- Knit (11) rows in Stockinette stitch. You are starting at Brim of Hat.
- Decrease row for shaping: Dec (1) stitch at beginning and end of both boards.
- You will make another (2) decreases in center of hat front.
- Place loops #15 on #16 and loops #30 on #31. This will create (2) empty needles on each board.
- Needles, first, #16, #31, last, will all have 2 loops on each (both boards).
- Carefully, shift all stitches towards center, filling in the empty needles created by decreasing.
- You will now have weaving on (34) needles on each board.
- Weave all (34) sts in stockinette. Hook over all. At decreased st, be sure to lift both bottom loops over top to complete the decreases.
- Knit these (34) stitches in Stockinette for additional (10) rows.
- Tan Accent Stripe: Tie in the Tan yarn at beginning of new row. Do not cut the main color. Lay the tails of yarn on knitting between boards.

- Cut the main color and knot.
- Row 3 thru 7 is knit in all tan yarn.
- Row 8-Weave the Tan yarn in Stockinette skipping every 3rd needle.
- Tie on the main color and cut the tan yarn. Fill in the empty needles with main color. Hook over.
- Continue with main color in Stockinette for additional 20 rows to complete top of hat.
- Bind Off and Finishing:
- Cut double strand of Rust yarn approximately 20” long to make anchor yarn across stitches.
- Lay yarn between boards over last row of knitting. Bind Off over the anchor yarn. This will be your hat top.
- Bind off loosely at original anchor yarn at brim of hat for a nice smooth finish.
- Knit Hat Back same as front.
- Sew side seams together to join the front and back of hat in matching yarns. Tie anchor yarns together at top of hat to have one continuous yarn. Pull yarn snuggly and tie securely for top of hat.
- Pull tails to inside of hat with crochet hook and trim.
- Fold up brim of hat at decrease row. What a Great Hat!

"Knitting board"? Do you mean "knitting LOOM"? Tried those; knit faster on needles. Is there a "translation" for needles?

Hi wendygoerl--thanks for your message. The knitting board and knitting loom are VERY similar. I believe the only difference is that the knitting loom is circular in shape. This pattern does not have a needle translation, but we have several other knit hats and scarves that use needles and not looms or boards. Simply search for them in the search box to find them. Hope that helps! --FaveCrafts Editors
