Long Cardigan Jacket
A long, classically-designed cardigan jacket is a great way to wrap up. With this free knitting pattern from Bernat Yarns, knit one in a neutral color to match everything in your wardrobe.
Materials:
- Yarn: Bernat Harmony (100 g/3.5 oz) 47008 (Ivory Beige) Sizes S–8 balls; M–9 balls; L–10 balls
- Knitting Needles: Size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) and 5 mm (U.S. 8) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge.
- 3 st holders.
- 6 buttons.
Gauge: 15 sts and 22 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).
Left Front
**With smaller needles, cast on 42 (46-50) sts.
Proceed in garter st (knit every row) until work from beg measures 4 ins [10 cm], noting first row is WS and ending with RS facing for next row.**
Change to larger needles and proceed as follows:
Next row: [K11 (13-14). Inc 1 st in next st] twice. K11 (12-14). Turn. Slip last 6 sts on a st holder. 38 (42-46) sts.
Next row: Cast on 1 st. Purl to end of row. 39 (43-47) sts.
Cont even in stocking st until work from beg measures 24 ins [61 cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Armhole shaping: Next row: Cast off 6 sts. Knit to end of row. 33 (37-41) sts.
Work one row even.
Dec 1 st at armhole edge on next 5 rows, then every following alt row 1 (3-5) time(s). 27 (29-31) sts.
Cont even in stocking st until armhole measures 4 1/2 (4 1/2-5) ins [11.5 (11.5-12.5) cm], ending with WS facing for next row.
Neck shaping: Next row: Cast off 5 sts. Purl to end of row. 22 (24-26) sts.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 6 rows, then every following alt row 3 (3-5) times. 13 (15-15) sts.
Cont even in stocking st until armhole measures 8 (8 1/2-9) ins [20.5 (21.5-23) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Shoulder shaping: Next row: Cast off 7 sts beg next row.
Work one row even. Cast off rem 6 (8-8) sts.
Right Front
Work from ** to ** as given for Left Front.
Change to larger needles and proceed as follows:
Next row: (RS). K6. Slip these 6 sts onto a st holder. [K11 (13-14). Inc 1 st in next st] twice. K11 (12-14).
Next row: Purl to end of row. Cast on 1 st. 39 (43-47) sts.
Cont even in stocking st until work from beg measures 24 ins [61 cm], ending with WS facing for next row.
Armhole shaping: Next row: Cast off 6 sts. Purl to end of row. 33 (37-41) sts.

BACK
With smaller needles, cast on 75 (83-87) sts.
Proceed in garter st, until work from beg measures 4" [10 cm], inc 6 sts evenly across last row and ending with RS facing for next row. 81 (89-93) sts.
Change to larger needles and proceed in stocking st until work from beg measures same length as Front to armhole shaping, ending with RS facing for next row.
Armhole shaping: Cast off 6 sts beg next 2 rows. 69 (77-81) sts.
Dec 1 st at each end of next 5 rows, then every following alt row 1 (3-5) time(s). 57 (61-61) sts.
Cont even in stocking st until work from beg measures same length as Fronts to shoulder shaping, ending with RS facing for next row.
Shoulder shaping: Cast off 7 sts beg next 2 rows.
Cast off 6 (8-8) sts beg next 2 rows. Leave rem 31 sts on a st holder.
SLEEVES
With smaller needles, cast on 37 (39-41) sts.
Proceed in garter st until work from beg measures 4 ins [10 cm], noting first row is WS, inc 2 sts evenly across last row and ending with RS facing for next row. 39 (41-43) sts.
Change to larger needles and work in stocking st, inc 1 st at each end of needle on next and every following 6th row to 61 (63-65) sts.
Cont even in stocking st until Sleeve from beg measures 18 (18-18 1/2) ins [45.5 (45.5-47) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape top: Cast off 4 (4-5) sts beg next 2 rows.
Dec 1 st each end of needle on next and every following alt row to 33 (31-27) sts, then every row to 17 (19-19) sts. Cast off rem 17 (19-19) sts.
Button Band: With smaller needles and RS of work facing, join yarn to rem 6 sts on Left Front st holder.
Next row: Cast on 1 st. Knit to end of row. 7 sts.
Proceed in garter st until work from beg measures same length as Left Front to beg of neck shaping, ending with RS facing. Sew Button band to Left Front as you work. Cast off.
Place markers for buttons on Button band, having first button 3/4" [2 cm] down from neck edge, last button 7 (7 1/2-8)" [18 (19-20.5) cm] up from bottom edge and rem 4 buttons evenly spaced between.
Work buttonholes as follows:
Next row: (RS). (Buttonhole row). K3. yfwd. K2tog. K2.
Next row: Knit.
Buttonhole Band: With smaller needles and RS of work facing, join yarn to rem 6 sts on Right Front st holder. K6.
Next row: Cast on 1 st. Knit to end of row. 7 sts.
Proceed in garter st until Buttonhole band measures same length as Front to beg of neck shaping working buttonholes to correspond to button markers.
Sew Buttonhole band to Right Front as you work. Cast off.
FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew buttons to correspond to markers.
Collar: With smaller needles and RS of work facing, beg at middle of the buttonhole band, pick up and knit 25 sts up right front neck edge. K31 sts from back st holder. Pick up and knit 25 sts down the Left front neck edge, ending in the middle of buttonband. 81 sts.
Proceed in garter sts for 5 ins [12.5cm], ending with WS of Collar facing for next row. Cast off knitways (WS).
