StellaLuna Knit Lace Shawl Pattern
This knit lace triangle shawl pattern is the finishing touch you've been looking for.
The StellaLuna Knit Lace Shawl Pattern is the staple your wardrobe's missing. Beautiful and stylish, it's hard to believe this shawl is handmade. The stunning lace knitting pattern makes it the perfect shawl to layer over a dress for a more elevated look. The StellaLuna Knit Lace Shawl Pattern was the answer to an age old solution with knitters— having to cast off way too many stitches when finishing any triangle shawl pattern. Knit from the bottom, this piece decreases as it goes. So, while you might have to cast on quite a few stitches, you'll end with only a few.
NotesThe shawl on the picture was knitted with nupps (A bobble-like texture stitch with origins in Estonian lace); however, if you don’t want to bother – they can be omitted and a designated stitch is knitted on a RS and purled on a WS. Or, if you want to make the shawl very fancy, you can add beads in place of nupps
Knitting Needle Size6 or 4 mm, 8 or 5 mm

Instructions for StellaLuna Knit Lace Shawl Pattern:
The shawl is knitted in tiers: Scheme 1 (bottom tier) is knitted once, Scheme 2 (middle tiers) is knitted 3 times, Scheme 3 (top of the shawl) is knitted once.
-
Start: Cast on 249 stitches on bigger needles. I really recommend using a short-tail method, or simple e-wrap. If you are using a long-tail method you might consider to cast on onto two needles and pull one out after you are done. The goal is to make the bottom row very loose for good stretching during the blocking. Knit the next row.
-
Bottom tier: Continue with smaller needles. Knit the right side of the shawl according to Scheme 1. After you reach the middle stitch, follow the same scheme FROM LEFT TO RIGHT to knit the left side of the shawl. Middle stitch is knitted once.
-
Middle tier 1: Knit according to Scheme 2. The fragment of scheme in gray (repeat) will be knitted 7 times. As before: once you have reached the middle stitch do the trick of following the scheme from left to right.
-
Middle tier 2: Knit according to Scheme 2. The fragment of scheme in gray (repeat) will be knitted 5 times. As before: once you have reached the middle stitch do the trick of following the scheme from left to right.
-
Middle tier 3: Knit according to Scheme 2. The fragment of scheme in gray (repeat) will be knitted 3 times. As before: once you have reached the middle stitch do the trick of following the scheme from left to right.
-
Top: Knit according to Scheme 3. As before: once you have reached the middle stitch do the trick of following the scheme from left to right.
-
Finish: You will have 9 stitches on your needle at this point. RS: Knit 3 together, 3 times. WS: Purl 3 together. Pull the yarn through the last stitch.

No thanks, that's a knitting chart (with confusing instructions), not a knitting pattern.

Interesting... you give the amounts to put on the needled... and then no pattern to knit. There is no Scheme 1, 2 or 3... therefore no lace.

Hi there, For specific pattern-related questions, we suggest contact the designer directly via her blog. Another option is posting your question on our Facebook wall so other knitters can help. Thanks!

Ok, so now I have found it in my inbox, but I am still going round in circles and not finding the actual lace patterns!

The hyperlink to the Patterns will not work, so can only print out the construction guide. I signed up to save the project but cannot now find it anywhere?

For those of you who may not know Stellaluna is a wonderful story about a young fruit bat who got separated from her mom, after reading this story you will never feel the same about bats ever again. It was written by a local author here in So. California. She has written other stories which I am sure are equally amazing but I haven't had kids with me and hunting for a specific book in the kids section is not always the easiest thing to do.

although I am still new to the knitting world, I just love this and can't wait to try it...but lace scares me. So so easy to tangle!

This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen! For some reason, I just love it. By the way, I have not heard of lace weight yarn before, can anyone tell me more about it? Thanks!

Here is a link to a comparison chart on yarn weights. Actually there is an explanation of lace weight yarn after the listing of Super Bulky yarns, because apparently it does mean different things to different people. http://www.knitpicks.com/tutorials/Yarn_Weights__D64.html It is generally a finer yarn than fingering weight and it wraps at 28-32 wraps per inch. I made my own WPI tool by marking off inches on one of the dowels I bought for about a dollar at WalMart. I used the rest to make Double pointed knitting needles of various sizes.
