Vintage Fleur de Lis Pendant

Take a trip back in time and create your own Vintage Fleur de Lis Pendant from Savannah Starr. Use the burned glue technique and watch as your brand new piece turns into a modern antique. This is a simple way to create the look of metal at home.

Materials:

Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue
Cool2Cast Fleur de Lis Pendant
Pliers
Rub ‘n Buff – silver
Black acrylic paint and paint brush
Paper towel
Candle with matches (I like to use a plumber’s candle or an emergency candle for this technique)
Wax paper
Cotton swab
Optional: Aleene’s Spray Acrylic – Gloss

Instructions:

Cover your work surface with wax paper. For this technique you want to work in a well ventilated area.
Squeeze a puddle of Aleene’s Tacky Glue onto wax paper.
Dip finger into glue and spread onto front of fleur de lis. You want a generous, but not drippy, coat of glue.
Light candle. Use pliers to hold pendant by the loop on back. Hold glue side down over candle flame. Do not put the glue into the flame but hold it about 1/2″ above the flame. Keep moving around so that the entire coat of glue is blackened by the flame. You may hear the glue sputter and see it bubble so keep it moving above the flame.
Let pendant sit on work surface for about 10 minutes. Use paper towel and gently press wrinkled texture into the sooty glue – use a light touch so that you do not break the skin of the glue. If you do break the skin, re-burn that area of the glue.
Let glue dry completely. Wipe away all soot to reveal a slightly shiny textured surface.
Paint back of pendant black. Let dry.
Squeeze a small amount of Rub ‘n Buff onto wax paper. Dip finger into paste and gently rub over textured surface of pendant. You just want to highlight the texture and leave some of the black showing through. Use cotton swab to get into corners. Repeat on back of pendant. Let dry.
If desired, spray with sealer.
