Moebius Scarf
Need to make a last minute gift for someone? This moebius scarf takes less than an hour to make when you use this free, easy sewing pattern from Rose Smith.
Materials:
- Rectangle 50" by 20" of silky fabric
- Needle
- Thread
Instructions:
- Fold the rectangle in half along its length with right sides together, giving you a rectangle 50" by 10". Sew a seam along one short (10") edge and the 50" edge, creating a tube with 1 end open. It is best to use a zigzag stitch for this seam because of the give in silky fabric. Don't worry if it gathers up slightly as you sew - it won't show.
- Push your hand down the tube of fabric, take hold of the end and pull back through to put the scarf right sides out. Turn under a small hem at the open end to close the gap. Pin, but don't stitch at this stage.
- Fold the other end of the scarf up level with the end you have just pinned. Flip the top half of the scarf so that the bottom edge in the photo becomes the top edge. You are putting a half twist in the top layer of scarf - see photo below left.
- Line up the ends of the scarf - the machine sewn end and the pinned end - and slipstitch across the end, making sure that you catch all 4 layers in your stitching.
- Because of the slight stretch in the fabric, the ends were not even when I came to the end of the seam so I just turned the last edge of the fabric over to even out the ends. You now have a continuous loop of fabric with a half twist in it - your own Moebius scarf.

I purchased a moebius scarf, made in china. The closing was machine stitched with a small opening which was hand closed. I have tried numerous ways to obtain this finish, with no success. There is a way to machine sew the closng, they know in china. If you could help, it would be appreciated.
