The FaveCrafts Guide to Avoiding Black Friday
Explore other ideas for what to do on Black Friday.
Historically, Black Friday, or the day after Thanksgiving, has been a thrilling time to get your Christmas shopping done while sales are running rampant. Over the years, stores have opened earlier and earlier to prolong the shopping festivities. Many of these stores now open even on Thanksgiving, and I just heard an ad today (November 8th!) for a Black Friday sale that's already underway.
If you're like me, you dream of getting those presents purchased well ahead of the retail madness and staying in on Black Friday! The trend is growing to stay in, have a delicious brunch with family and friends, and maybe even get some Christmas crafting done. Below are our top suggestions for avoiding Black Friday madness and cozying up hygge-style on the day after Thanksgiving.
Put Up the Christmas Tree
I know this is a point of contention around many folks. Some people think the day after Thanksgiving is too early and overzealous to put up the tree, but I disagree! This has been a longstanding tradition in my family and let me tell you, it is a lovely one. Put on those favorite Christmas songs in the background while you gather the family together to put up the tree.
Don’t have an artificial tree? Well the “real versus fake tree” is a whole other debate, but if you’re looking to get an artificial one, make sure you visit this guide from AllFreeChristmasCrafts.
Make Brunch
A new tradition that’s arising on Black Friday since so many people are in town and have off work is getting together at someone’s house for brunch! This is a great option for a Friendsgiving or simply to spend more time with loved ones over the holiday weekend. Check out some fantastic brunch recipes from RecipeLion below.
Host a Potluck with Thanksgiving Leftovers
Maybe brunch isn't particularly convenient for you to host on Black Friday, or you'd simply prefer to have people over for dinner. Dinner should be easy to prepare because you can just serve leftovers! Have friends and family over for a Thanksgiving leftovers potluck. Simply reheat any of the food you still have, or make something delicious like a Thanksgiving Leftovers Casserole!
GET CRAFTING
Is there a better day in existence for crafting? You have the day off work, everyone's around, and you can totally invite loved ones over to craft together. Have brunch and then get started on your DIY Christmas decorations! Believe me, we have a ton of ideas for you to get started.
Crochet Your Christmas Gifts
If you're a crocheter, you probably should have gotten started on your Christmas presents by now, but no matter: Black Friday's the day! Check out our Christmas gift guide for homemade crocheted presents. Just make sure you stock up on yarn before Black Friday if you're going to avoid shopping that day.
Knit Your Christmas Presents
Knitters, you really should have started your gifts by now. While the feud continues as to whether crochet or knitting use more yarn, it is pretty much accepted that crochet is faster than knitting. So what are you waiting for?? Hurry up and make any of the knit Christmas gifts in our collection.
Make Gifts for your Boyfriend
Men are impossible to shop for, and they can be pretty challenging to craft for, too. That's why we put together a guide for you! Explore our collection of DIY gifts for your boyfriend and spend the day crafting something for him. Again, make sure you have your materials on hand already so you can avoid the chaos of the shopping centers.

I try and avoid Black Friday all together and find some sewing to do around the house so I do not even have to deal with the traffic at all. I like the idea of a pot luck leftovers and I love my candied yams. You can relax and make some jewelry for those gifts or even just wath Hallmark Christmas movies with your friends. Great idea to finish your gifts too. Anything than dealing with those crowds. If it can not be purchased online then never mind for me.

OhMyGoodness, I never thought to host a potluck of Thanksgiving leftovers before. That would be perfect! I'll have to bring that up to my friends for this year. We're typically always together for Black Friday for one reason or another. Might as well get rid of family leftovers we can't possibly eat. Also, I'm usually the person ironically shopping on Black Friday. Not for the deals but because that's when I remember that I have none of the gifts I'm supposed to have by then.
