I think good lighting and good lenses will make your photograph stand out better. Close ups will draw attention to the details of your item and if you blur the background you also draw attention to the item

There are also many good freeware graphic programs that you can install on your computer, rather than working on-line. One that I have used is Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/). Also, most digital cameras come with some form of photo-editing software.
