How to Make Salt Dough

Mix up a batch of salt dough and entertain your child for hours. There’s so much fun to be had – use cookie cutters for neat shapes or sculpt freestyle. Let it dry and use acrylic paints for even more decorating fun!

Materials:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 3/4 cup water
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Mixing bowl

Steps:

  1. Mix together salt, flour, and water in a large mixing bowl.

  2. Knead in food coloring (if desired). Continue kneading until mixture reaches a doughy consistency.

  3. Use immediately or store in an airtight container for later use.

Like the others here, I have used a similar recipe with my students back in the late 70's and it contained some cream of tartar and alum which made the dough very white and easy to work with. We made ornaments and sculpture of all kinds depending on the age of my students. We let them air dry, sometimes on top of the radiators, and then finished them with acrylic paints. This is a wonderful and fun project!

I have used this dough recipe for years. At one point, I found a recipe that included adding white Ivory dish washing liquid. It makes the dough creamier to work with and results in a smoother finished product. I have ornaments made from both recipes that my children and I made in 1989. I also recommend sealing the finished product with an acrylic glaze (gloss or matte)...spray on works just fine. Hope this helps.

thankyou very much,my grandchild will love this..great for snowy days.

I TAUGHT KINDERGARTEN FOR SEVERAL YEARS & USED THIS TO CREATE SHAMROCK NECKLACES WHEN TALKING ABOUT ST. PATRICKS DAY! PRETTY COOL. ON TREE OF THE LEAVES WE WROTE WITH GOLD PEN, FATHER, SON, & HOLY SPIRIT.

I remember this from when I was in grammer school, we made CA maps with it. I am now a grandmother of 15 and I'm going to show it to my grandchildren. Maybe I can get them away from their DSL's. Thank You for the recipe. Donna
