Whenever you see a newborn in a photo, a play, a movie, or a reenactment at your local church, more likely than not, that baby is swaddled in a blanket. Swaddling babies in blankets is a tradition we don’t often think about because we’re surrounded by it in all of our images of newborns. The practice of wrapping a baby in a blanket is a tried and true practice for the baby’s comfort, and it’s an iconic visual we immediately recognize as pertaining to newborns.

Out of all of the images of swaddled newborns, we most often see babies in blue or pink blankets. This tradition dates back to the 1950s. Back then, a medical company named Medline supplied many hospitals around the country with these simple and sweet blankets. Though the company has updated the color scheme on its blankets, Medline still provides these supplies to hospitals. If you look closely on your next visit to maternity ward, you can still see those classic blue and pink blankets that have defined the way we portray and visualize newborns.

Instructions for blanket

Blanket measures 39 x 32 inches.

  1. With larger hook, ch 90.

  2. Row 1 (Right Side): Dc in 6th ch from hook, dc in next 4 ch, ch 1, skip next ch, [dc in next 5 ch, ch 1, skip next ch] 13 times, dc in last ch; turn.

  3. Row 2: Ch 3, dc in first dc, * ch 2, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2 **, 3 dc in next ch-1 space; repeat from * to last 2 sts, end at **; skip next ch, 2 dc in next ch; turn.

  4. Row 3: Ch 3, dc in next dc, * dc in next ch-2 space, ch 1, dc in next ch-2 space **, dc in next 3 dc; repeat from * to last 2 sts, end at **; dc in next dc and top of ch-3; turn.

  5. Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first dc, * ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc; repeat from * across working last sc in top of ch-3; turn.
