One Minute Yarn Pom Pom
Looking for yarn craft ideas that don't require a hook or needles? In just sixty seconds, you can create your own One Minute Yarn Pom Pom using Red Heart Yarn. Use this colorful craft as a gift topper or add one to your shoes - there are so many options.
Materials:
Instructions:
-
Remove the paper wrapping from yarn. Using the nylon thread, cut off a long piece and tie around the center of the yarn.
-
Flip the yarn over to the opposite side and tie the nylon thread around the ball again, this time making sure to make the tie as tight as you can.
-
Once you’ve made the nylon thread nice and tight, go ahead and make a couple of strong knots. Cut your thread ends short. Now you’re ready to start cutting into your pom pom!
-
Start by making your initial cut as shown, aligning your scissors to cut roughly one-third through the thickness of the ball.
-
Once you’ve cut into the yarn, lightly run your fingers through the yarn and allow the loose threads to fall separate from the rest of the yarn. Be careful not to pull too hard on the yarn that is still attached to the rest of the ball.
-
As the yarn starts to fall loose, you’ll notice some loops towards the inside of the ball. Using your scissors, cut those loops in half and fluff these out as well. Repeat this process until you feel like you’ve gotten most of the thread loops snipped in half.
-
Once you have one half of your ball fluffed out and untangled, take your hand and make a tight fist around the shortest part of the loose threads as shown. Evenly trim the excess.
-
Repeat steps 3 through 6 on the other half of the pom pom.
- To shape your pom pom, work from the middle-out. Trim evenly by grabbing a fist full of yarn and cutting to the shortest layer.
NOTE: The yarn should generally be longer in the middle of your pom pom, so you’ll want to start by trimming those threads first.

You could make a large pom pom like the one shown by using a lot less yarn than wasting an entire skein. I can think of much better uses for yarn than this thing. :(

Not impressed with this one at all and does seem like a waste of yarn!

I think it's an expensive decoration that will probably get thrown out.
