Boo-tiful Painted Halloween Canvases

Add an unexpected element you your traditional Halloween decor with a pair of Boo-tiful Painted Halloween Canvases. Used mixed media techniques to create one of a kind pieces you can display all year. This isn't your standard DIY wall decor - you'll need everything from stencils to book paper, and that's just the beginning. Materials:

  • DecoArt Media Paint
  • Plastic Stencils
  • Paint Brush
  • Foam Brush
  • Palette Knife
  • Book Paper
  • Wood Canvas
  • Canvas
  • Sanding Block
  • Paper Towels

 

“Owl” Canvas Instructions:

  1. Apply DecoArt Media Gesso to an 8x8 canvas with a palette knife. Allow to dry for at least 2 hours.
     
  2. Apply 3 colors of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics to the canvas with a paint brush, blending where the colors meet. Allow to dry.
     
  3. Lay a stencil over one side of the canvas and spray with DecoArt Media Misters. Remove and clean the stencil. Remove the sprayer from the DecoArt Media Misters and flick the straw end towards the canvas to make a splatter effect.
     
  4. Lay an owl stencil over a book page. Apply DecoArt Media Antiquing Cream to the stencil and onto the paper. Remove and clean the stencil.
     
  5. Apply a layer of DecoArt Media Matte Medium to the canvas. Press the book page onto the canvas. Apply a layer of Matte medium over top of the book page to seal it.
     
  6. Apply a small amount of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics in Interference Gold to the canvas with a brush.
     
  7. Lay a script stencil over the owl image and spray small sections of the stencil with DecoArt Media Misters. Remove and clean the stencil.
     
  8. Use a piece of punchinella as a stencil by laying it on the canvas and dabbing DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics through the mesh.
     
  9. With the brush from stenciling, dry brush the edges of the canvas with the leftover paint from the stenciling in the previous step.
     
  10. Mix DecoArt Media Texture Sand Paste with a small amount of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics Paint to tint the Paste.
     
  11. Lay a stencil onto the canvas and apply the tinted DecoArt Media Texture Sand Paste through the stencil with a palette knife. Remove the stencil and clean the stencil and palette knife immediately.
     
  12. Allow to dry, then seal with DecoArt Media Soft Touch Varnish.

 

“Halloween Raven” Canvas Instructions:

  1. Apply DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics to a 6x6 Wood Canvas using a paint brush. Thin the paint with DecoArt Media Matte Medium. Be sure to coat the sides of the canvas completely.
     
  2. Lay a script stencil on top of the canvas and apply DecoArt Media Crackle Medium with a palette knife. Remove the stencil and clean the brush and stencil immediately. Allow the Crackle Medium to dry completely for at least an hour.
     
  3. Spray the canvas with DecoArt Media Misters, removing the spray and flicking the straw end of the sprayer at the canvas for a more intense splatter effect. Blot an excess with a paper towel.
     
  4. Lay a raven stencil over the canvas and apply DecoArt Media Antiquing Cream to the stencil. Remove and clean the stencil. Buff with a paper towel.
     
  5. Use a piece of punchinella as a stencil by laying it on the canvas and dabbing DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics through the mesh.
     
  6. Lay a number stencil over the canvas and apply DecoArt Media Antiquing Cream to the stencil. Remove and clean the stencil. Buff with a paper towel.
     
  7. Using a sanding block, sand the edges of the canvas. Wipe the dust away with a clean cloth.
     
  8. Apply DecoArt Media Soft Finish Varnish on the entire canvas and allow to dry.
