Knitting Needle Size10 or 6 mm, Circular Knitting Needles

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge16 sts = 4" [10 cm]; 32 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Garter stitch (knit every row).

CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

Finished SizeThrow measures about 44 x 55" [112 x 139.5 cm], not including border.

  • Susan Bates® Knitting Needles: 6mm [US 10] straight needles and 32" [80 cm] long circular needle (for border)

INSTRUCTIONS

Notes

  1. Throw is made from twenty squares sewn together following assembly diagram (click here for larger version).

  2. Each square is worked diagonally from corner to corner.

  3. After squares are sewn together, borders are worked along all four edges of throw and then diagonal corner edges of the borders are sewn together.

SQUARE (make 20)

With straight needles, cast on 1 st.

  1. Increase Section

  2. Row 1 (right side): Kfb—2 sts

  3. Row 2: Kfb, k1—3 sts.

  4. Row 3: Kfb, k2—4 sts.

  5. Row 4: Kfb, k3—5 sts

  6. Rows 5–61: Kfb, knit to end of row—62 sts

  7. Decrease Section

  8. Rows 62–121: K2tog, knit to end of row— 2 sts remain

  9. Row 122: K2tog—1 st. Fasten off last st.

FINISHING

Arrange squares in a grid 4 squares wide and 5 squares tall following the assembly diagram, and sew squares together.

  1. Top Border

  2. With circular needle, pick up and k112 sts as evenly spaced as possible along top (a short edge) of throw. Work back and forth in rows on circular needle as if working with straight needles.

  3. Row 1: Kfb, knit to end of row—113 sts.

  4. Rows 2–12: Kfb, knit to end of row—124 sts

  5. Bind off loosely.

  6. Lower Border

  7. Work same as top border along lower edge of throw

  8. Side Borders

  9. Pick up and k142 sts as evenly spaced as possible along one side edge of throw. Work back and forth in rows on circular needle as if working with straight needles.

  10. Row 1: Kfb, knit to end of row—143 sts

  11. Rows 2–12: Kfb, knit to end of row—154 sts.

  12. Bind off loosely. Repeat side border along remaining side edge. Sew diagonal corner edges of borders together.

  13. Weave in ends.
