Work in 2x2 twisted rib for 8 rounds (knit into the back loop of the STS).
Work in stripe pattern as follows (knitting all STS unless otherwise indicated):
    1 round color A.
    2 rounds color B.
In color C, *K2, SL2* to end of round.
    Repeat SL ST round.
    2 rounds color B.
    1 round color A.
    2 rounds color C.
In color D, *SL2, K2* to end of round.
    Repeat SL ST round.
    2 rounds color C.

    2 rounds color D.
In color B, *K2, SL2* to end of round.
    Repeat SL ST round.
    2 rounds color D.
    1 round color A.
This creates the stripe pattern. Continue working in this manner until hat measures approximately 7”/18cm from bottom edge, ending with a color A round.
With colors B and C, work next 2 solid stripe rounds, 2 Sl ST rounds, and 1 more solid round.
Next round (final solid round of the stripe) is worked as follows:
    *K2, K2tog* around
Work 1 more full stripe repeat as follows:
    1 round color A.
    2 rounds color C.
In color D, *K2, SL1* to end of round.
    Repeat SL ST round.
    1 round color C.
Next round: *K1, K2tog* around, cut all but color A yarn.
3 rounds even in color A.
    Next round: K2tog around.
Break yarn, pull through STS and secure. Weave in ends and block lightly if desired.

  2. Fingerless Gloves (Make 2):
Cast on 40 STS, join in the round.
Work in 2x2 twisted rib for 8 rounds (knit into the back loop of the STS).
Work in stripe pattern as follows (knitting all STS unless otherwise indicated).
    1 round color A.
    2 rounds color B.
In color C, *K2, SL2* to end of round.
    Repeat SL ST round.
    2 rounds color B.
    1 round color A.
    2 rounds color C.
In color D, *SL2, K2* to end of round.
    Repeat SL ST round.
    2 rounds color C.
    1 round color A.
    2 rounds color D.
In color B, *K2, SL2* to end of round.
    Repeat SL ST round.
    2 rounds color D.
    1 round color A.
This creates the stripe pattern. Continue working in this manner until work measures approximately 4”/10cm from bottom, ending with a color A round.

  3. Begin thumb gusset:
With color B: K2, PM, K2, PM, K to end of round.
Next round: K2, SM, RLINC, K2, LLINC, SM, K to end of round.
Work 2 “dot” rounds as follows:
Using color C: SL2, SM, SL1, K2 in contrasting color, SL1, SM, *SL2, K2* to end of round.
    Repeat for 2nd round.
Work next round even in solid stripe color.
Next round (final solid stripe round of this section):
K2, SM, RLINC, k4, LLINC, SM, K to end of round.
Work 1 round of color A
Switch to color C, work 1 round even
Next round: K2, SM, RLINC, K6, LLINC, SM, K to end of round.
Work 2 “dot” rounds as follows:
Using color D: K2, SM, SL3, K2 in contrasting color, SL3, SM, *K2, SL2* to end of round.
    Repeat for 2nd round.
Work next round even in solid stripe color.
Next round (final solid stripe round of this section):

Work 1 round of color A.
Switch to color D, work 1 round even.
Next round: K2, SM, RLINC, K10, LLINC, SM, K to end of round.

    Repeat for 2nd round.
Work next round even in solid stripe color.
Next round (final solid stripe round of this section):
K2, SM, RLINC, K12, LLINC, SM, K to end of round.
Work 1 round in color A.
Work 1 more stripe section evenly with colors B and C without increasing. You will work K2, SL2 for the dot rounds just like the beginning rounds.
With color A, K2, BO next 14 STS, work to end of the round.
Work 1 more full stripe section using colors C and D, ending with a color A round. Cut all colors except color A.
Using color A, work in 2x2 twisted rib for 3 rounds, then bind off loosely in pattern. Weave in ends and block lightly if desired.

NotesThis pattern can easily be adjusted to be larger or smaller by changing the stitch count in multiples of 8.

If using the recommended yarn, be aware that the dye residue may rub off onto your hand but it washes off easily. It had been suggested to soak the project in water and vinegar to help keep the colors from transferring.

Don’t be intimidated by the look of this multi-colored project! The dots are knitted using the mosaic technique in which you slip stitches and only knit with one color at a time. Get the look of intarsia without the work!
