I find it convenient to use a toothpick holder for needles. They stand up straight, and you don't get stabbed with them near as much or as hard. Also, you can put floss or thread in a film canister and label it with the color or number. This doesn't take up much space and keeps colors together well.

I use the mechanical pencils, so I use the plastic tubes in which the leads come to store the needles. I have enough to have one for each of the different size of needles, like one for the tapestry needles, one for the embroidery, etc...

I find that using decorated cough drop tins lined with layers of magnetic strips is perfect for not only holding the needles but keeping them in order. If I'm doing a quilting project I place a layer of the strips (leaving the backing on) on top of the others.
