At first I thought this was going to be about those old vintage ads with Santa drinking a coke! As an alternative to putting holes in the crate, you could either use those command temporary hooks that come in the very small size, which are the type and small, size to hang small lights, or you could use tacky putty, or even Velcro strips, which could still be removed or at least covered over. Clever idea which could also be adapted for days leading up to a birthday, a new baby's arrival anticipate by big brother or sister or any other holiday. Clever and very creative. Thanks for sharing!

I happen to have a gold and red Coca-Cola glass bottle drink crate that we bought long ago at an antique store. What I like about this DIY is that it doesn't ruin the original crate. If I made this for myself, I could use it one year and then if I wanted I could take it apart later without too much damage (other than a few small holes). I would love the hunt for the random Christmas gift paper, too.

The crate is great on it's own as a design item - doesn't need this doing to it

I think that just punching a hole in the card to hang on the nail would look better that using all the clips, and you don't need clips
