Crochet Cowl Hood

MATERIALS:
- Bernat® Alpaca (100 g/3.5 oz; 110 m/120 yds)
- #93310 (Plum) - 4 balls
- Crochet Hook: size 8 mm (U.S. L or 11) or size needed to obtain gauge.
MEASUREMENTS:
Approx. 29 ins [73.5 cm] around x 26 ins [66 cm] long.
GAUGE:
9½ sts and 12 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in pat.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Ch 70 loosely. Join with sl st to first ch to form a ring, taking care not to twist chain.
- 1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each ch around. Join with sl st to first ch.
- 2nd rnd: Ch 1. *1 sc in next sc. 1 dc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc.
- 3rd rnd: Ch 3 (counts as dc). *1 sc in next dc. 1 dc in next sc. Rep from * to last dc. 1 sc in last dc. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.
- 4th rnd: Ch 1. *1 sc in next dc. 1 dc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc.
- Rep last 2 rnds for pat until work from beg measures 26 ins [66 cm]. Fasten off.

Have made 7 of these using wool-eze and they turned out beautiful! I also made 2 out of left over red heart yarn, using two strands. When using alpaca (be careful it sheds-alot!) I didn't work up as many rows so it wouldn't be suffocating but lay nicely.

I love this pattern, I have made several of them in different types of yarn. Some of the thinner yarns I chained 100 to get the size needed. This is such a pretty pattern when worked up, and I love the wrong side of this as much as the right side. Judi G

I am making it with Red Heart worsted weight and ended up chaining 120 to start. I draped it after three rows and it looks about right. When it's done we'll see!

Just A tip: To keep yarn clean and free of cat hair (from my Mr. Magoo), I use the large plastic coffee containers, cut a whole in the center of the lid and place the yarn inside. These are absolutely great and keep the yarn free from tangles and whatnot. Of course I soak them overnight prior to using them to make sure the coffee smell is gone (sometimes even longer if I smell even a 'hint' of coffee yet). These work very well (for me anyway). Hope it works for you too!

I made this out of baby bounce and although the pattern is easy to follow, and unique it's not very pretty. The cowl was so heavy I felt suffocated. Too much material up around the neck and face. I may try again with a slightly lighter yarn, but not soon. Too many other projects to try.

I made it for my daughter-in-law she loved it. She said everyone wanted one like it. I made it with a Bernat gray she had gotten it came out great.

I got a set of 4 yarn holders, which are large platic jugs with flip top lids and a hole in the lid for yarn. One of my favorite things. I think I paid about $4 for each and they come in different sizes. I am making this pattern with Caron One Pound Acrylic (on sale for $6 at Michaels's last week). I'll let you know how it turns out.

Dsynr1 - Bernat Alpaca is made from alpaca and acrylic. Often times people who are allergic to wool from sheep, use alpaca successfully in its place. I would recommend buying a skein of Bernat Alpaca and making a small wrist cuff to wear. If it does not aggravate your allergies, it could be your safe alternative to sheep's wool. If that does not work, you can also try other types of animal based yarn fibers in the same manner. I hope you are able to broaden your world with other wonderful fibers.

I made this in a different yarn than what is called for and it worked up great! Will be making two more in bright orange for my friend and I who walk our dogs in areas where hunting is allowed. Love this cowl!

Where did you get your bright orange yarn? The only thing I could find was the "Syracuse Orange" school color on Amazon. So I crocheted a cap for my hubby :)

Just a tip. I use empty 2-3 liter soda bottles to put my yarn in to keep clean and from tangeling. Cut off the bottom above the ridge and insert yarn through the top. quiltinggma
