Smurf Hat
You'll be singing a happy song after you make and wear this awesome Smurf Hat! Crochet hat patterns are great for beginners, so there's no excuses! Make a Smurf Hat for you and all of your friends!
Materials:
- 1 Ball of Red Heart Blue Yarn
- 1 Ball of Red Heart White Yarn
- Small amount of Black Yarn
- 2 - ½” black buttons
- Fiberfill
Instructions:
Chain 1 counts as a single crochet and Chain 3 counts as a double crochet throughout pattern.

- With K Hook and Blue Yarn Ch (66) (60) (54) and sl st to form a ring. (Try not to twist chain when forming the ring)
- Row 1: Ch 1, sc around, sl st to ch 1 (66) (60) (54)
- Row 2-18: Repeat Row 1 (66) (60) (54)
- Change to White Yarn
- Row 19: (In front loops only) Ch 1, sc in next 4 sts, 2sc in next st, *sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat from * around, sl st to ch 1 (77) (70) (63)
- Row 20: (In both loops) Ch 3, dc around, sl st in top of ch 3 (77) (70) (63)
- Row 21-22: Repeat Row 20 (77) (70) (63)
- Row 23: Ch 3, dc in next 4 sts, dctog, *dc in next 5 sts, dctog * repeat from * around, sl st in top of ch 3 (66) (60) (54)

- Row 37: Ch 3, dctog, *dc in next st, dctog* repeat from * around, sl st in top of ch 3 (22) (20) (18)
- Row 38: Ch 3, skip one, dctog around, sl st in top of ch 3 (11) (10) (9)
- Row 39: Ch 1, sctog around, sl st in ch 1 (6) (5) (4)
- Fasten off and sew shut. Weave in end.
- Anchor the top part of hat to the middle of the hat with needle and yarn. Weave in ends.
- Finishing Edge: Finish edge of blue by holding hat upside down and single crochet around bottom.
- Fasten off and weave in ends. This hat can also be worn as a headband, but stopping at row 18. Do finishing edge on both the top and bottom of headband.
- Eyes (Make 2): With I Hook and White Yarn Ch 3, sl st to form ring
- Row 1: Ch 1, sc 5 in ring, sl st to ch 1 (6)
- Row 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, 2 sc in next 5 sts, sl st to ch 1 (12)
- Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hd in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, hdc in next st, sl st to top of ch 2 (18)
- Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing to hat.
- Attach ½ “ black buttons a little off center as pictured…
- Eyebrows (Make 2): With I Hook and Black Yarn Ch 6, fasten off
- Leave long tail for sewing to hat
- Ears (Make 2): With I Hook and Blue Yarn Ch 3, sl st to form ring
- Row 1: Ch 3, dc 8 in ring, sl st to top of ch 3 (9)
- Row 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to top of ch 3 (18)
- Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st * repeat from * around, sl st in ch 1 (27)

- Nose: With G Hook and Blue Yarn Ch 3, sl st to form ring

- Fasten off and leave a long tail.(Don‘t close shut.) Stuff nose firmly and sew right below eyes so that they are just touching, but not overlapping the eyes.

Question! First, Bless your big blue Smurf heart for sharing this pattern. My Grandson is going to love his, he was a Smurf for Halloween last year,2013. What size yarn did you use, size 4 knitting worsted? Also did you use a smaller hook for the Child's size, and what shade of blue did you use? DCTOG means double crotchet together and is used to refer to a cluster stitch, which is made up of a number of stitches. This is a type of stitch, which decrease the number of stitches compared to the preceding row. i need a little bit of help. for number 21, anchoring the top part of the hat, i dont understand it. is the "ball" shape supposed to become flat? im very confused about this step and dont understand what it is supposed to be like when finished.

To keep the hat flopped forward, I took a yarn needle and some yarn and basically attached the top of the hat to the middle front of the hat. This keeps the white part of the smurf hat in place.

On Line 13: Row 28, you will lay your hat flat. The back half of the hat you will dc and the front half of the hat you will sc (in front loops only). This way the hat will get taller on the back and shorter in the front. It starts to curve forward. **Anchoring the hat. The reason for the anchor is to keep the hat in place. Basically fold the hat forward half way down. Take some white yarn and tie the top of the hat to the font middle of the hat. It might make more sense when you get to that part. I hope this helps.

If you have not received an answer to your question yet about dc in back half of stitch & sc in front half. When you are crocheting there are two loops to a stitch, one at the back of your work & one at the front. You dc into the back loop, then sc into the front loop. Hope this helps.

For this pattern I wanted the back half of the hat taller, so by making double crochets in the back part of the hat and changing to sc when you work the front part of the hat, it will make the hat slouch forward. Lay the hat flat and put a stitch maker in each side. DC across the back of hat from one stitch marker to the next, then SC across the front till you reach the stitch marker on the other side.

I made this hat...As cute as it looked, I found it too tall and top heavy for a child to wear..But all is not lost...It now holds 2 rolls of toilet paper in the downstairs bathrom!!

May I suggest you make 2 or 3 rows less in the blue and white to make the hat shorter. Then you adjust the eye size to fit them in. Hope this works.

I had fun making my hat into Smurfette...I made her nose smaller, and gave her some eyelashes and long yellow yarn hair. I did, however only make one ear hoping that it looks like her other one is hidden. (also, instead of button eyes, I crocheted black circles)

It might be alright for kids. Maybe. But, no, I wouldn't ever make something like this, because I wouldn't wear it and don't know anyone else who would. And, this includes the kids I know.

i appreciate fave crafts very much, but i think if they put a pattern out here, someone there (or the pattern owner) should check periodically to see what/if CONSISTENT problems or questions come up on said pattern....just sayin.......unmonitored submissions with problems and concerns means frustrated crocheters.

May I 'assume' that dctog means dc2tog?? It is written that way in all the areas but it doesn't make sense that way. To dc together you need more than one, at least. Correct? Also, there is no list of crochet hook sizes or hat sizes under materials needed. I found them later down in the pattern. Need to see those things at a glace... Just saying........ But really cute hat!!!

Have finished the basic hat supposedly for my grandson. The blue comes up to my own crown and the white seems too long. Perhaps I will try it again, and with a smaller hook and perhaps less blue rows.....boohoo, but I won't give up. I am sure the ears and nose and eyes will also make a huge difference!

I was looking for a Smurf hat pattern and found this one. I thought it was really cute for my 5 yr old nieces Smurf themed birthday. I turned it into Smurfette by using yellow yarn for hair and making eyelashes. I only made one ear though because she has her hair over the other. I don't think I can upload a picture (I am new to this site).

Hi - I am about to answer my own question ladies. Row 28: this is what I did. The 3-chain is the first of 14 dc's I made for the back (I am doing the child size) next 13 stitches sc, putting hook into just the front part of the stitch as per pattern. Continue same in following 4 rows. Looks OK! That's how far I have got. Good luck.

I have finally figured out about that dctog. It is a decrease, I was just doing it wrong,I now have the correct # of sts in my rows! hOORAY!! HERE IS HOW TO DO THEM: (yo,inset hook,yo draw loopthrough, draw through 2-loops on hook)in each of the stitches indecated, yo,draw through all loops on hook. (dc dec) hopes this helps you all. vivaj234, I took a chance & so far paid off.. I folded the hat in half making sure it was centered in the middle & counted for back side middle 8dc sts the started counting across from there to across front to my marker 18sts to where the hat was folded then rom there I started dc's again till where you join w/slst. (count your ch3-joining st as your 33rd) somehow it came out to be the 33stiches. Hope this helps! crochet mom

your right! jcharles.. I'm just now starting row 26 ending with 33 sts. Since we will also end up with 33sts in row 28,I don't see how we can divide front & back sts evenly. I think it's cute! I used to collect Smurfs (the little ones) and I would have made this hat in a heartbeat back then! My ex-husband used to say Smurfs were "satanic" (he was weird.) I've heard of people being scared of them, but I think they are darling! I used to have over 100 of them in my kitchen and it was so cool to wake up and go in there and see all those little blue smiles!

SMURFS RULE I think the Smurf Hat is very funny and cute. Not scary. My son loved Smurf cartoons and products 30 years ago, and the recent Smurf movie was a huge hit with this generation. I think every child would love one. When my son was a baby, the nursery was done in Smurf wallpaper, rugs, linens and curtains. We continued to purchase the radio, clock, figurines and stuffed dolls, t-shirts, etc. Even the Smurf big wheel when the time came for it! Your Smurf Hat is definitely a "MAKE IT." I am on it like a robin on a junebug

Try copy and pasting the instructions to a word document. I have done that many times in the past. You won't have the picture, but the written instructions will copy.

NEVER, never, never. What an embarrassment for a kid to be seen in it. Someday the kid will grow up, and someone will have taken a picture, and the face that was under that hat will remain red for a long time. Good crocheting, though. LOL

I created a Sponge Bob hat for my great grandson and he loved it. He wanted to wear it all the time. I will have alot of fun with Smurf and know that my great grandchildren will love this hat also. Thanks for all the great patterns.

you could change the nose to orange/red and keep the top of the hat blue and make a "Grover" from Sesame Street . . . very cute either way!
