American Flag Apron
Crochet a patriotic apron with an American flag pocket for cooking essentials. Use as a BBQ apron from Lily Sugar n' Cream on the 4th of July or celebrate your national pride anytime.
Materials:
- Yarn: Lily® Sugar’n Cream® (70.9 g / 2.5 oz)
Color A - #00001 White 10 oz [284 g]; 483 yds [438 m] or 4 balls
Color B - #00009 Bright Navy 1½ oz [42 g]; 72 yds [65 m] or 1 ball
Color C - #00095 Red 1 oz [27 g]; 46 yds [42 m] or 1 ball
- Crochet Hook: Size 5 mm (U.S. H or 8) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.
Size: Approx 22½ x 24 ins [57 x 61 cm]
Gauge: 13 hdc and 14 rows = 4 ins [10 cm].
Instructions:
Note: To change color, work to last 2 loops on hook at end of row. With new color, draw through 2 loops on hook, then proceed.
APRON
With A, ch 74.
1st row: 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook (counts as 1 hdc). 1 hdc in each ch to end of ch. Turn. 72 hdc.
2nd row: Ch 2 (does not count as st). 1 hdc in each hdc to end of row. Turn.
Rep last row until work from beg measures 16 ins [40.5 cm].
Next row: Ch 2. (Yoh and draw up a loop in next st) twice. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook - Hdc2tog made. 1 hdc in each st to last 3 sts. Hdc2tog. 1 hdc in last st. Place markers at each end of row. Turn.
Rep last row until 28 sts rem.
Cont even until work from beg measures 23 ins [58.5 cm]. Fasten off.
EDGING
1st rnd: With RS facing, join A with sl st to bottom right corner of Apron. Ch 1. 3 sc in same sp as sl st. Work 71 sc along bottom edge, 3 sc in corner, 53 sc up side edge, 2 sc in marked st, 23 sc up armhole edge, 3 sc in corner, 27 sc across top edge, 3 sc in corner, 23 sc down armhole edge, 2 sc in marked st, 53 sc down side edge. Join B with sl st in first sc.
2nd rnd: With B, ch 1. 3 sc in same sp as last sl st. Work 1 sc in each sc around, having 3 sc in corners and 2 sc in marked sts. Join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
NECK STRAP
With B, ch 71.
1st row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of ch. Turn.
2nd and 3rd rows: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. Fasten off at end of 3rd row.
Ties (make 2)
With B, ch 101.
1st row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of ch. Fasten off.
FLAG POCKET
With C, ch 48.
1st row: (RS). 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. 1 hdc in each ch to end of ch. Turn. 46 hdc.
2nd row: Ch 2 (does not count as st). 1 hdc in each hdc to end of row. Join A. Turn.
3rd row: With A, ch 2. 1 hdc in each st to end of row. Turn.
4th row: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each st to end of row. Join C. Turn.
5th to 8th rows: Rep 3rd and 4th rows twice more.
9th row: With C, ch 2. 1 hdc in each of first 30 hdc. With B, 1 hdc in each st to end of row. Turn.
10th row: With B, ch 2. 1 hdc in each of first 16 hdc. With C, 1 hdc in each st to end of row, changing to A at end of last st. Turn.
11th row: With A, ch 2. 1 hdc in each of first 30 hdc. With B, 1 hdc in each hdc to end of row. Turn.
12th row: With B, ch 2. 1 hdc in each of first 16 hdc. With A, 1 hdc in each hdc to end of row changing to C at end of last st. Turn.
Rep 9th to 12th rows twice more, then 9th and 10th rows once, omitting color change at end of last row. Fasten off.
FINISHING: Embroider stars on Flag Pocket as illustrated. Sew Pocket to Apron. Sew Strap and Ties to Apron as illustrated.
