How to Make the Spice Islands Placemat Pattern

Materials

  1. 99-03 Embers—1 ball

  2. 94-03 Almond—1 ball

  3. 7 mesh plastic canvas sheet at least 10 x 14" (25 x 36cm)

  4. Tapestry Needle

Pattern Notes

  1. Work with strands of yarn no longer than about 18” to prevent fraying as the yarn is pulled repeatedly through the canvas.

  2. Note that the diagram shows the 4 corners of the piece. Continue stitching in established pattern to fill the space, referring to photo.

  3. In the instructions below, the vertical and horizontal plastic strands of the canvas are referred to as “threads”. The openings between these strands are referred to as holes.

Placemat

  1. Counting the “threads”, not the holes, mark off a section of your plastic canvas 94 “threads” wide and 67 “threads” tall. Cut your plastic canvas to size. Use sharp scissors and trim it close to avoid leaving nubs that will snag your Raffia.

  2. Beginning in upper right hand corner with A, leaving 2 “threads” unworked at each edge for now, work inner border stitches on canvas as shown in diagram.

  3. With B, work inner section in rows.

  4. With B, work outer border. These stitches are worked around the edge of the canvas.

Finishing

Weave in all ends on wrong side.

I want to make some of these placemats and coasters. I love these. I have seen the plastic canvas sheets before but did not imagine that you could make beautiful placemats with them and I saw the raffia yarn and wondered too. This is a house warminggift for sue just need to determine the colors. Super video to show you how so come join me and let's make some placemats.

Looking at only the instructions, I was completely lost. The video is a must with this project. Step 2 of the project refers to the diagram. Where do we find the diagram that is supposed to be used for this?

Never have I crafted with these plastic sheets. It looks like something that I'd be interested in trying out. I watched the video tutorial and it turns out it is a lot easier than I expected it to be. Definetly something I could sink my teeth into. These placemats! I want to make mine with shades of sea green and blues on the trim, with the nautral rafia in the body of the placemat. Coasters, too? I found a new creative outlet -)
