Cables and Blocks Afghan
Patterned knit squares are highlighted by cable columns in this unique afghan knitting pattern from Patons. Knit a matching pillow with this pattern also.

- Knitting Needles: Size 4 mm (U.S. 6) knitting needles. Size 4 mm (U.S. 6) circular knitting needle 90 cm long for Afghan or size needed to obtain tension
- 1 cable needle
- Stuffing for Pillow
Size:
BLANKET: Approx 35 x 45 ins [89 x 114.5 cm]
PILLOW: Approx 8 ins [20 cm] wide
Gauge:
22 sts and 30 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.
Abbreviations:
C6B = slip next 3 sts onto a cable needle and leave at back of work. K3, then K3 from cable needle.
Cr5B = slip next 2 sts onto a cable needle and leave at back of work. K3, then P2 from cable needle.
Cr5F = slip next 3 sts onto a cable needle and leave at front of work. P2, then K3 from cable needle.
MK = P2tog without slipping sts off needle, then K2tog over same sts.
Inc1P = inc 1 st purlways in next st.
Inc1K = inc 1 st knitways in next st.

These 18 rows form panel pat.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures same length as Strip A or B, when slightly stretched, ending on a 3rd row of pat. Cast off.
Sew strips tog in the following order, beg at left: Strip A, Strip C, Strip B, Strip C, Strip A, Strip C, Strip B.
Side Edging: With RS of work facing, MC and circular needle, pick up and knit 228 sts evenly across long edge of Afghan. Work 8 rows garter st (knit every row). Cast off knitways. Rep across opposite edge.
Top and Bottom Edging: Work as given for Side Edging, picking up 182 sts evenly across rem edges.
Pillow
Note: When working separate sections of colors in Pillow, wind small balls of the colors to be used, one for each area of colour in the design. Start new colors as indicated in instructions. To change colors, twist the two colors around each other where they meet, on WS, to avoid a hole.

Next row: (WS). P2tog. Pat across 23 sts. P2togtbl. Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Next row: Sl1. K1. psso. Pat to last 2 sts. K2tog.
Next row: P2tog. Pat to last 2 sts. P2togtbl.
Rep last 2 rows until there are 9 sts. With MC, cast off.
With WS of work facing, join MC to rem sts.
Next row: P2tog. Pat to last 2 sts. P2togtbl.

This is so pretty. I love blocks and cables so you know I will be making this one. My grand daughter loves pinks and purples so thus color would work very well. I do like Paton yarns. They don't split and the colors are true and match up perfectly. Thank you!

This one looked complicated but its really not. I found it quick to knit once I'd mastered the pattern. I have done it in one solid colour and everyone comments on it (brag brag lol). My sister wants one for Christmas. I am almost finished, its taken about 3 weeks to do, in the evening in front of the telly. Really enjoying my knitting!
