Batik Fiber Necklace

Use Batik ribbon yarns in various colors and a crochet hook to create a beautiful fiber necklace. Assorted lightweight beads add additional intrigue to this jewelry craft project. This project is an excerpt from C&T Publishing Color Your World with Princess Mirah Batiks.

Materials:

• 1 skein Princess Mirah’s Crafts Marigold 1⁄4˝ Batik cotton ribbon yarn
• 1 skein Princess Mirah’s Crafts Garnet 1⁄2˝ Batik cotton ribbon yarn
• 1 skein Princess Mirah’s Crafts Wild Lime 1⁄4˝ Batik cotton ribbon yarn
• 1 skein fine eyelash yarn
• Crochet hook, size Q (16mm)
• Large-eye embroidery needle
• Assortment of 16–24 lightweight beads (small, medium, and large diameters)
• Assortment of 18–30 large-hole spacer beads (gold, silver, or copper)
• 1–3 large pendant bead(s) (to hang at the base of the necklace as the focal point)
• Large jump ring(s) or beading wire
• Beading pliers
• Jewelry glue

Instructions:

1. String 8–14 beads onto the eyelash yarn using a large-eyed embroidery needle. Do not cut the yarn.
    
2. Leave a beginning 10˝ tail and crochet a single chain with the Garnet ribbon yarn and the eyelash yarn held together. While chain stitching, push up the beads randomly in the stitches to distribute them every 11⁄2˝–3˝ along the chain. Make the chain 20˝–22˝ long. Knot off and cut the 2 yarns, leaving a 10˝ ending tail.
   
   
   Randomly distribute beads in chain.
    
3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 with the Marigold ribbon yarn and the eyelash yarn.
    
4. String 8–14 large-hole spacer beads onto the Wild Lime ribbon yarn, using the embroidery needle if necessary. Repeat Step 2 with only the Wild Lime ribbon yarn.
    
5. Evenly and tightly twist the 3 beaded chains together and knot securely at both ends to retain the twist.
    
6. String 8–14 spacer beads onto the Marigold ribbon yarn. Repeat Step 2 with the Marigold ribbon yarn and the Wild Lime ribbon yarn.
    
7. Leaving a 10˝ beginning and ending tail, single chainstitch a 20˝–22˝ length with the Garnet ribbon yarn.
    
8. Twist all 5 ribbon chains loosely together and knot together securely at both ends.
    
9. Determine the center point of the necklace. Attach the focal bead(s) at this point with the jump ring(s) or beading wire through a chainstitch and secure.
    
10. Slip all the strands of 1 tail of the necklace through a spacer bead. Slide the spacer bead up next to the knot and secure with a dab of glue. Repeat on the other tail end.
    
    
    Add spacer beads to tails.
     
11. To wear the necklace, tie the ends into a loose bow.
