Adding Names to Quilts
Signing Off on Your Quilt by Big Kitten
For putting names on quilts, I embroider the name on. No fading or labels coming off. I usually put it in a lower corner.
Adding Fabric Labels to Quilts and Other Projects by Anonymous
Any of the acid-free pens used for scrapbook will work for making fabric labels. They are permanent and will not run. A hint for making it easier to write on the fabric is to iron some freezer paper to the BACK of the fabric (glossy side to the fabric). This will stabilize the fabric for you to write on. After you are finished writing on the label, simply peel the freezer paper from the back and proceed to affix the label to the project.
Embroider Names on a Quilt by Valerie Soltis
Put the name on a tag and then embroider over it. This process is one that was used at our family reunion when everyone was asked to sign their name on a tablecloth then all the names were embroidered over and the year was added. It's amazing how you can look back and remember people by looking at a very old table cloth. Some of the kids also drew pictures along with signing their names. It is a fun project.

My sewing machine has an alphabet stitch so I stitch my name and date on a label and sew it on the back!...lasts longer than ink!

before i had my embroidery machine, i would write the name on the fabric with a fabric pen (water or air erasable) and then i would hand sew tiny beads over the writing. it adds a bit of texture and a personal touch to the project. i know it takes a lot longer but in the end it was all worth it.
