Earth-friendly crafts don't have to look like, well, trash. Instead, find out how to make Paper Towel Handmade Paper from Heidi Borchers and use it to create your own cards, scrapbook pages and more. You'll never need to purchase paper again once you've tried out this craft.

This project may seem complicated but it's so easy. Begin by tearing the plies apart, ripping them up and and placing the pieces in a blender. Use paint, food coloring or even construction paper scraps to create the appropriate color for your handmade paper. Pour the mixture into a water-filled container, Create your own mold by stapling a screen to an old wooden frame. Place your mold into the water and when you take it out, place the piece on a towel. Remove any excess water using a sponge and let the piece dry for at least a couple of hours. Create your own greetings, journals and more using your own handmade paper! No one will believe it was made out of scraps and paper towels.

This is a great project. I used to teach children and one of my favorite lessons was on paper, where it came from (oh and where you could go from there-saving the planet) and how to recycle it. We made cards, stationary, posters, etc. & added dried flowers or whatever. The ecological lesson as well of the creative aspect really opened there eyes to all possabilities.

Thank you, Heidi! It's brilliant for small-scale use. Obviously, you'll use cheaper materials like unprinted newspaper-type paper on a roll for large-scale purposes. Then colour it and add interesting bits left over from, say, quilling projects. I'm going to use up my old bought handmade paper for this. It's too crumpled and faded to use for anything else.

I think it is interesting but dont see where it is eco friendly to buy and then use paper towels for making paper

thanks for just using one frame. so far all the directions i have seen required 2, but it's completely unnecessary, as you show. if you want a specific size, just use the frame upside down so the pulp is inside the frame. fold up a towel and put it inside so it's easy to sponge off the water. nice work.
