Christmas Granny Squares Afghan and Pillow Set

A Christmas granny squares afghan and pillow set is the perfect way to decorate your home for Christmas. This crochet afghan pattern uses octagonal  granny "squares" in red and green for a festive way to keep warm this winter.

Afghan:

Materials:

• 485 yds. Paddy Green Red Heart 4-ply yarn
• 490 yds. White Red Heart 4-ply yarn
• 940 yds. Jockey Red Red Heart 4-ply yarn
• H, I, and J crochet hooks or size needed for guage
• Tapestry Needle

Instructions:

GUAGE: Square measures 5 ¾” across

STITCHES USED: Chain (ch), Single Crochet (sc), Half Double Crochet (hdc), Double Crochet (dc), Slip Stitch (sl st)
Special Stitch: Shell Stitch (Sh St) – 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc

SQUARES (Make 72)

1. Rnd 1 – With red and H hook ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to beg sc.
    
2. Rnd 2 – Ch 4, dc in same st, (dc, ch 1, dc) in each st around, join to 3rd ch of ch 4 and fasten off.
    
3. Rnd 3 – Join white with a sl st in any ch 1 sp, ch 2, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same sp, ch 1, *Sh St in next ch sp, ch 1, rep from *around, join to top of beg ch 2 and fasten off.
    
4. Rnd 4 – Join green with a sl st in any ch 1 sp of Sh St, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, *ch 2, 2 hdc in next ch 1 sp, ch 2, sc in next ch 1 sp of Sh St, ch 2, 2 hdc in next ch 1 sp, ch 2, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch 1 sp of Sh St, rep from * around, join to top of beg ch 2 and fasten off.
    
5. Rnd 5 – With I hook and red sl st in any corner ch 2 sp, ch 2, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp, *ch 1, 2 dc in ch 2 sp, ch 1, rep from * across until next corner ch 2 sp, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp, rep pattern around, join to top of beg ch 2 and fasten off.

JOINING: With right sides facing you and red whipstitch squares together sewing 9 rows of 8 squares each.

EDGING:

1. Rnd 1 – With I hook and white (sc, ch 3, sc) in any ch 3 corner sp, *ch 3, sc in next ch 1 sp, rep from * across to next ch 3 corner sp, (sc, ch 3, sc) in sp, rep pattern around entire afghan, join to beg sc and fasten off.
    
2. Rnd 2 – With J hook and green (sc, ch 3, sc) in any ch 3 sp before corner ch 3 sp, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next sc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch 3 sp, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next sc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in every ch 3 sp across, rep pattern around entire afghan, join to beg sc and fasten off.

• 14” Fiber filled Pillow

Instructions:

GUAGE: Square measures 6 ½ ” across

STITCHES USED: Chain (ch), Single Crochet (sc), Half Double Crochet (hdc), Double Crochet (dc), Slip Stitch (sl st)
Special Stitch: Shell Stitch (Sh St) – 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc

SQUARES (make 8)

1. Rnd 1 – With red and I hook ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to beg sc.
2. Rnd 2 – Ch 4, dc in same st, (dc, ch 1, dc) in each st around, join to 3rd ch of ch 4 and fasten off.
3. Rnd 3 – Join white with a sl st in any ch 1 sp, ch 2, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same sp, ch 1, *Sh St  in next ch sp, ch 1, rep from * around, join to top of beg ch 2 and fasten off.

JOINING OF SQUARES (make 2):

With right sides facing you and red whipstitch squares together sewing 2 rows of 2 rows each.

EDGING ON EACH JOINED SQUARES:0

With J hook and white (sc, ch 3, sc) in any ch 3 corner sp, *ch 3, sc in next ch 1 sp, rep from * across to next ch 3 corner sp, (sc, ch 3, sc) in sp, rep pattern around entire 4 squares, join to beg sc and fasten off.

EDGING AND JOINING OF SQUARES:

Work wrong sides of both 4 square pieces together in white ch 3 sps of squares. With J hook and green (sc, ch 3, sc) in any ch 3 sp before corner ch 3 sp, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch 3 corner sp and in every ch 3 sp and ch 3 corner sp around entire squares inserting the pillow before the last sides are crocheted together, join to beg sc and fasten off.

Optional: Make 2 bows of 1 strand each of green and white and attach 1 bow to center on each side of the pillow.
