Lacy Crochet Afghan and Pillow Set

Spruce up the baby's nursery with one of Roseanna Beck's crochet baby afghans.  In this project, you'll also learn how to make an adorable matching pillow for a complete set.

BABY AFGHAN

SIZE: 36” x 46”

Materials:

• 560 yds. Blue Jewel or Light Blue Red Heart 4-ply yarn
• 400 yds. Petal Pink Red Heart 4-ply yarn
• 635 yds. White Red Heart 4-ply yarn
• G crochet hook or size needed for guage
• Tapestry Needle

GUAGE: Octagon Motif measures 5” across
Insert Motif measures 2 ½” across

STITCH GUIDE

Chain (ch), Single Crochet (sc), Half Double Crochet (hdc), Double Crochet (dc),
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Special Stitch: Shell – 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc

OCTAGON MOTIF (make 63)

Rnd 1 – With pink ch 5 and form a ring, ch 2, work 15 hdc in ring, join with a sl st to top of beg
ch 2 and fasten off.
Rnd 2 – Join blue with a sl st in any hdc, ch 2, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same st, *ch 1, skip next hdc,
(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next hdc, rep from * around, join to top of beg ch 2 and fasten off.
Rnd 3 – Join white with a sl st in any ch 1 sp before 2 dc, ch 2 (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, *2 dc in
next ch 1 sp, Shell in next ch 1 sp, rep from * around, join to top of beg ch 2 and fasten
off.

INSERT MOTIF (make 48)

Rnd 1 – With pink ch 5 and form a ring, work 16 sc in ring, join to beg sc and fasten off.
Rnd 2 – Join blue with a sl st in any sc, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, *skip 1 sc, 2 dc in next
sc, skip 1 sc, Shell in next sc, rep from * around, join to top of beg ch 2 and fasten off.

JOINING

With right sides facing you and white whipstitch Octagon Motifs together sewing 9 rows of 7
motifs each. With blue sew in Insert Motifs. See attached diagram.

EDGING

With pink starting at upper right corner (sc, ch 3, dc) in Shell ch 2 sp, skip 1 dc (sc, ch 3, dc) in
next dc, (sc, ch 3, dc) in next dc, skip 2 dc, (sc, ch 3, dc) in next dc, skip 1 dc, (sc, ch 3, dc) in next
Shell ch 2 sp, rep until joining, (sc, ch 3, dc) in joining, rep pattern around entire afghan, join
to beg sc and fasten off.

FINISHING: Attach 1 strand each of pink and blue yarn to form bows on each corner of
afghan.

PILLOW:

SIZE: 11” x 11”

Materials:

• 60 yds. Petal Pink Red Heart 4-ply yarn
• 85 yds. White Red Heart 4-ply yarn
• 70 yds. Blue Jewel or Light Blue Red Heart 4-ply yarn

EDGING AND JOINING OF MOTIF PILLOW SIDES

Join two pieces with wrong sides together to form pillow sewing through both sides when
joining making sure to fill pillow with fiberfill before finishing last side.
With pink starting at upper right corner (sc, ch 3, dc) in Shell ch 2 sp, skip 1 dc (sc, ch 3, dc) in
next dc, (sc, ch 3, dc) in next dc, skip 2 dc, (sc, ch 3, dc) in next dc, skip 1 dc, (sc, ch 3, dc) in next
Shell ch 2 sp, rep until joining, (sc, ch 3, dc) in joining, rep pattern around entire pillow, join
to beg sc and fasten off.

FINISHING: Attach 1 strand each of pink and blue yarn to form bows to each side as shown on
photo.
