Cute Snuggly Caterpillars

Not only do these caterpillars from Bernat Yarns make for great snuggly friends, but they're easy to crochet. Having free crochet patterns such as this one is so much fun. This would make for a great baby shower gift.

MEASUREMENTS
Approx 10 ins [25.5 cm] around x 19 ins [48 cm] long.

GAUGE
15 sc and 16 rows = 4 ins [10 cm].

MATERIALS

  • Bernat® Handicrafter Cotton
  • (50 g/1.75 oz/73 m/80 yds)
  • or Bernat® Satin
  • (100 g / 3.5 oz/149 m/163 yds)

Size 4 mm (U.S. G or 6) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge. Stuffing. White and black felt for eyes. Craft glue.

Approx = Approximately.
Beg = Beginning.
Ch = Chain.
Dc = Double crochet.
Hdc = Half double crochet.
Rem = Remaining.
Rep = Repeat.
Rnd(s) = Round(s).
Sc = Single crochet.
Sl st = Slip stitch.
Sp(s) = Space(s).
St(s) = Stitch(es).
Yoh = Yarn over hook.

Steps
Note: Ch 3 at beg of rnd counts as dc.

First section: With MC, ch 3. Join with sl st to form a ring.
1st rnd: Ch 1. 6 sc in ring. Join with sl st to first sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 1. 2 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc. 12 sc.
3rd rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same sp as last sl st. *1 hdc in next sc. 2 hdc in next sc. Rep from * to last st. 1 hdc in next sc. Join with sl st to top of ch 2.
4th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each hdc around. Join with sl st to first sc.
5th and 6th rnds: As 3rd and 4th rnds once more. 27 hdc.
7th rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same sp as last sl st. (1 hdc in each of next 2 sc. 2 hdc in next sc) 8 times. 1 hdc in each of next 2 sc. Join with sl st to top of ch 2. 36 hdc.
8th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each hdc around. Join with sl st to first sc.
9th rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each sc around. Join with sl st to top of ch 2. Rep last 2 rnds 4 times more. Join A and place marker at end of last rnd.
2nd section: With A, rep 8th and 9th rnds 6 times more. Join B and place marker at end of last rnd.
3rd section: With B, rep 8th and 9th rnds 6 times more. Join MC and place marker at end of last rnd.
4th section: With MC, rep 8th and 9th rnds 6 times more. Join A and place marker at end of last rnd.

Head: With A, rep 8th and 9th rnds 5 times more. Stuff Caterpillar before continuing.
Next rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as sl st. (Draw up a loop in each of next 2 hdc. Yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook - Sc2tog made. 1 sc in each of next 2 hdc) 8 times. Sc2tog over next 2 hdc. 1 sc in next hdc. Join with sl st to first sc. 27 sts.
Next rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of ch 2.
Next rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as sl st. (Sc2tog over next 2 hdc. 1 sc in next hdc) 8 times. Sc2tog over next 2 hdc. Join with sl st to first sc. 18 sts.
Next rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of ch 2.
Next rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each hdc around. Join with sl st to first sc.
Complete stuffing of Caterpillar.
Break yarn leaving a long end. Draw end through rem sts tightly and fasten securely.

FINISHING
Weave A through marked rnds and tie tightly to define each section of Caterpillar as shown in picture. Fasten securely.
Legs and feet: (make 12).
With A, ch 6, with MC, ch 8. Turn. 14 ch.
Next row: With MC, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook. 1 dc in each of next 3 ch. With A, 1 dc in next ch. 1 hdc in next ch. 1 sc in each of next 5 ch. Fasten off.
Weave in ends. Sew legs to body of Caterpillar, having 2 pairs each on sections 2, 3 and 4.
Cut black felt ¾ ins [2 cm] in diameter and 1 inch [2.5 cm] of white felt for eyes. Glue eyes to head as shown in picture.

I don't have a baby but shoot I wish I did, because then it would give me an excuse to make a couple of these adorable crocheted caterpillars. I love the pale pastel colorway instead of the usual primary color theme. They look very much like a toy you would find at a fancy boutique store. I love crocheting anything and everything and this one is a keeper.

I like this pattern so thank you for sharing it with us. I plan to make one using brighter colors. It will be a gift for my nephew.

BIG CAUTION: The caterpillar is really cute, but for a baby, you should crochet on the black eyes, not glue felt eyes on that the baby could pull off and swallow.
