I used Bernat baby yarn. It is very soft. . Whenever it goes on sale I stock up because I know I'll be using it to make something. I just have to have an idea of what I'm going to make, like a plushie or blanket so I know many skeins to buy. There's nothing worse than running out of yarn before you finish the project only to find it's been discontinued or out of stock!

The asterisks? They mark the section that you repeat when it says to "work from to ." You don't know what that means unless you read ahead. I had that same problem when I first saw this in a pattern. It takes time to learn all the abreviations and to read a pattern. You'll get it!
