Super-Cute Crocheted Cupcake Hat
This super-cute crocheted cupcake hat from Red Heart Yarn is one of our favorite free crochet baby hat patterns. It's adorable and warm!
Directions for hat are for size Small. Changes for Large are in parentheses.
Hat circumference: 14 (16)".
Materials:
- TLC® ―Baby" 6 oz (170 g), 490 yd (448 m):1 skein each 5737 Powder Pink A and 5011 White C
- RED HEART® ―Buttercup™" 1.76 oz (50 g), 72 yd (66 m) balls: 1 skein 4276 Light Blue Multi B
- Crochet hook, 6.5 mm [US K-10½]
- Yarn needle
Gauge: With 2 strands of A, 14 sts = 4". CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the
gauge.
SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS
Bpdc (Back post double crochet) = Yo, insert hook from the back side of the work to front and to back again around the post of the indicated stitch on a previous row; yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo and draw through two loops (2 loops on hook), yo and draw through two loops (1 loop on hook)
Fpdc (Front post double crochet) = Yo, insert hook from the front side of the work to back and to front again around the post of the indicated stitch on a previous row; yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo and draw through two loops (2 loops on hook), yo and draw through two loops (1 loop on hook)
sc2tog = [draw up a loop in next st] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Instructions:
HAT
Band
With 2 strands of A held together as one, ch 48 (56), and without twisting ch, join into a ring with slip st in first ch.
Round 1 (right side): Ch 3 (count as dc here and throughout), dc in each ch around, join with slip st in top of beginning ch – 48 (56) dc.
Rounds 2-4: Ch 3, Fpdc around the post of next st, *Bpdc around the post of next 2 sts**, Fpdc around the post of next 2 sts; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, join with slip st around the post of beginning ch-3.
Ruffle
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in tfl ONLY of each dc around, join with slip st in first sc.
Round 6: Ch 1, sc in first st, *skip next sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * around, omitting last sc, join with sl st in first sc – 12 (14) shells. Fasten off.
Crown
Round 1: With right side facing, join one strand of B in remaining back loop of any st in round 4 of band, ch 1, working tbl ONLY, sc in each dc around, join with slip st in first sc.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each of first 6 sc, *sc2tog in next 2 sts**, sc in each of next 6 sc; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, join with slip st in first sc – 42 (49) sc.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in each of first 5 sc, *sc2tog in next 2 sts**, sc in each of next 5 sc; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, join with slip st in first sc – 36 (42) sc.
Round 4: Ch 1, sc in each of first 4 sc, *sc2tog in next 2 sts**, sc in each of next 4 sc; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, join with slip st in first sc – 30 (35) sc.
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in each of first 3 sc, *sc2tog in next 2 sts**, sc in each of next 3 sc; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, join with slip st in first sc – 24 (28) sc.
Round 6: Ch 1, sc in each of first 2 sc, *sc2tog in next 2 sts**, sc in each of next 2 sc; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, join with slip st in first sc – 18 (21) sc.
Round 7: Ch 1, *sc2tog in next 2 sts; repeat from * around, sc in last 0 (1) st, join with slip st in first sc – 9 (11) sc.
Round 8: Ch 1, *sc2tog in next 2 sts; repeat from * around, sc in last st, join with slip st in first sc – 5 (6) sc.

FINISHING
Weave in ends. With C, make a pompom and attach it to the top of the hat

I am in love with this cupcake hat! The pattern looks like I could make it in just an afternoon. I am thinking for the pom pom I will have to do some research on the easiest way to make one. Does anyone have any suggestions? I will have to look at different yarn options to maybe adjust for a boys hat.

This is exactly what I like about handmade crafts. You can always follow your own style and pattern. You can always mix up different colors. It's so nice that I get to learn this crochet cupcake hat which would be a perfect gift for my goddaughter. I just have to add up some colors maybe.

I think this has is so cute! Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. Love, love, love it. My granddaughter just looks so cute in it. Like the picture, I did the band in pink, and the top of the hat I did in a variegated pink and brown, and the pompom I did in white. It looks just adorable.

I really like the hat but tried to make it but the Red Heart yarn (Buttercup) was it fuzzy because it was hard to work with? can you let me no the exact yarn you used for the crown, because that is all the Red Heart (Buttercup) they had! thanks RR

There are lots of YouTube video tutorials for making a pom pom for a knit hat. Some use your hand, some use a cardboard piece, and some use a fork or other things, believe it or not! Basically, you're just wrapping the yarn around something to make the size you want, tying it through the middle, then cutting the loops.

I have previously made 2 different color combos, of the cupcake hat, I did not find it difficult and it turned out adorable, I would definately make it again!!!

Unfortunately I don't know how to crochet and really don't care to learn. Is there a pattern for us knitters to use? I really think that this is adorable and would love to make some for the hospital that I knit baby hats for.

I think this baby cup cake hat is adorable. Yes, I would make it if I had a baby still in the family. Normally I am not crazy about the cup cake patterns for adults, but this is nice. jcg1224

I am totally going to make two of these for my twin nieces! I am going to change the brim from pink to a chocolate brown. We are big on chocolate in this family!

I think this cupcake hat is adorable, and I will be making several of them, as I have friends who are "getting" new grandbabies, and I'm getting a new great-granddaughter in February. I love this site, and really appreciate all the free patterns!
