This hat is adorable. Love the happy sunshine yellow color. Cotton yarn is so soft and very easy to work with. I love the way it feels against my skin and I try to make all of the things that I make that are wearables in cotton yarn. So many people are allergic to acrylic yarns. You cant go wrong with cotton.

This crocheted sun hat is really a very cute hat. It is made of cotton yarn and is not really too hard to make. I made it in pink for a gift. The person that got it was very happy with and loved it. I plan on making another one for me in the very near future. I thought it was an easy pattern and the instructions were very easy to read. I used cotton yarn from hobby Lobby which is very soft and comes in many different colors. Enjoy.

Just what I was looking for to crochet. Why buy a hat when I can enjoy making one in my own colours, add my own embellishements etc. Grateful for the free pattern. I'm just learning to write patterns.

If the hat comes out too big using the size F hook, you might want to use a smaller hook, like an E or a D, but then also you might want to use a different textured cotton yarn as well or use another cotton thread like size 10 cotton yarn instead of the Sugar and Cream. It is somewhat smaller and would make the hat come out lighter than this. Just a suggestion.

I just finished this hat for my trip to Charleston this Summer and I love the way it turned out! I added more rows to the brim to make it even bigger to keep the sun off of my face. I did cheat a bit and used some white florist wire to keep the brim up. I even crocheted a pretty flower and attached it to the side. Row 15 was different, but if you read it slowly and actually do what it says word for word, it does work out. I never count stitches that carefully, so if it had 86 instead of 88, it didn't matter to me or the design of the hat. My suggestion to anyone who thinks the hat got too big around for their head would be to weave elastic around the cap between the stitches.

Made this hat. Did everything accrding to pattern. It is huge!!!!!!! For a giant. You can't even wear it. I'm ripping it all out. And by the way, row 15 was not easy to figure out. I just went to youtube, but it still wasn't that helpful. I figured it out, but it's not my favorite stitch. I can't believe how big this hat came out. It's so disappointing. Looks like an appliance cover.

I had several balls of yarn that I made from old tee shirts and am using that to make the hat. This is my first crochet project more complex than doilies or edging on a knitted top, and I am very pleased at the progress. Thanks so much for posting this pattern!

To answer:I agree with Crafter 7212182. Cannot figure out how to make row 16 in 88 stitches. Can someone enlighten us? Was easy up until this point. Thanks. Answer>You should have a chain 3 and 28 sets of 3 cross overs in row 15 which gives you 85 stitches. In row 16, after crocheting in 27 sc with 2 sc in next st (3 times), this will give you 88 stitches.

This hat is adorable and I had no problem making it. However, I checked my gauge and had to use an "E" hook instead of "F." I think that's why my hat, for lack of a better word, looks "squatty." Has anyone else used a different hook and didn't like the look of the finished product? I will make another, this time w/the "F" hook.

Very easy and extremely fast! Purchased the yarn this afternoon... finished hat this evening. BE SURE TO CHECK GAUGE - it calls for an "F" hook & "G" will be much too large.

On Row 15 is there supposed to be a ch 1 between the crossed dc? I can't get (1 sc in next 27, 2 in next dc) on Row 16 otherwise.
