One Skein Asymmetry Scarf

These free crochet scarf patterns from Lisa Gonzalez are asymmetrical in detail and in overall form, using an easy repeating asymmetrical shell pattern. The one skein asymmetry scarf uses only one skein of yarn!

Asymmetry Scarf

Materials:

One skein Lion Brand Homespun (approx. 6 oz./ 185 yds)
Size K crochet hook
One decorative button
Yarn needle

Instructions:

Ch 29
Row 1: Turn. Ch 2. Sk 3 chs of base ch. *in next ch (4 dcs, ch 2, dc), sk 6 chs*; rep from * to * across, ending w sk 3 chs, dc in last ch.
Row 2: Turn. Ch 2. Sk 2 dc, *in ch-2 sp of shell (4 dcs, ch 2, dc), sk 5 dcs; rep from * to * across, ending w dc in tch.
Rep row 2 until piece measures 45 in. or desired length. In the last stitch of the end of the last row, before finishing. Ch 8, join w sl st in same st, creating a loop. Finish off. Weave in ends w yarn needle. Sew button to loop.

If you love how this scarf looks then you'll love how the stitches look upclose. The detail on the intricate shell stitch is so beautiful plus you don't need alot of yarn to make this scarf. You might need to update your knowledge of abbreviations before you read the pattern if you're a beginner but it's all good from there.

I had some trouble reading the pattern once I reached row 2. I'm grateful to everyone posting because you all clarified what the issue is. Each row has 4 motifs ( or shells ). Every shell is off center and they tilt in the opposite direction from the previous row. I am doing each shell in the second chain of the ch 2 space as I like the appearance of the shell when it's tighter at the bottom.

I'm having trouble with the beginning. it states Row 1: Turn. Ch 2. Sk 3 chs of base ch. *in next ch (4 dcs, ch 2, dc),. Does it mean to add 2 more chains to the 29 chains I just made? And what does base ch mean?

Hi yolandatahy40--Thanks for your comment. In answer to your questions...the base chain is the beginning chain of 29 stitches...so you're going to skip the first three chains of the chain of stitches you just created. For the chain 2, that is your turning chain. Once you've done 29 stitches, you're going to turn your work so the back side is facing you...then you chain 2 (the turning chain), skip 3 chains, and 4dc, chain 2, and 1 dc in the next chain...which would be the 4th chain from the hook. I have just finished making this scarf and as a beginner at crochet found it remarkably easy to follow and make! I didn't have the correct yarn and as I was eager to try and make it used an aran weight yarn I had. I love it and it looks a more complicated stitch than it was. I have decided not to use a button but am crocheting a flower to fit through the loop to secure it. Ive posted a photo on my facebook and pintrest pages. Many thanks

I have made two. One I made a bit smaller for a frail elderly woman. I put the button on so she could wear it open o closed. She likes the button. When walking with her walker it keeps it in place. The 2nd one is mine and I love it. Very pretty, and I had no problem with the direction. Thank you!

I think I will love the scarf, just have question. Where it says in parentheses, 4dc,ch2, and in green dc with an arrow, I'm not quite sure where to dc. In the same space as the 4 dc? Sorry just sure?

4dc, ch2, and dc is done all in the one chain. So you chain 29 sts. Turn work. Ch 2. Skip 3 ch of BASE chain line. 4dc, ch2, dc all in that 4th chain of BASE chain line. Ignore the green color and green arrow in directions. You will note if you pass your cursor over it, it's a bloomin' ad. Ugh Anyone else out there....correct my instructions if I've got it wrong but it seems to work on the sample I've done.

I find the pictures are so poor that it is too difficult to see what the garments actually look like, not just with this particular scarf, but many of the patterns

It sounds like an error, surely! Try sewing the button at the other end and put the loop over it.

I also thought it meant the scarf itself was asymmetrical but it refers to the "shell" having 4 dc, 2 ch, then 1 dc, which is different from most shells which appear symmetric. I am currently following another scarf pattern whose shell is off-center like this one, so pattern is tilted sideways but adds visual appeal.
