Ornate Sunbathing Umbrella
This ornate sunbathing umbrella project from Krylon is a great way to add some personal flair to your patio or back yard. If you want to know how to make a patio umbrella your own, check out these ideas.
Materials:
- Krylon Outdoor Spaces® Metallic Finish - Gold Metallic (#2906)
- New or old umbrella in any color that will show the metallic paint
- Stencil (of your choice, birds, flowers, scroll patterns etc.)
- Newspaper, drop cloths or old sheets
- Masking Tape
- Ruler
- Pencil
Instructions:
- Set up a working area. Cover a table or other work surface with newspaper or a drop cloth.
- Determine the stencil pattern you are going to use.
- Remove the umbrella cover from the frame. (Most umbrellas are divided into panels, it’s best to paint one panel at a time and let it dry before moving on to the next panel.)
- Measure the length and width of the stencil. Measure the length of the panel. Determine the number of stencil patterns that will fit on each panel.
- Using newspaper or old sheets, mask off areas of the umbrella that you don’t want painted to protect them from overspray.
- Lay out the stencil and tape it down on the umbrella panel. Spray with a light even coat. Be careful not to oversaturate.
- Remove the stencil and repeat steps 1 through 5 until the umbrella is complete.
Ideas to Inspire:
Be creative and try using a variety of colors or patterns. Pick patterns that compliment your backyard style. (For example Tropical, Tuscan, Zen, Contemporary.)
Tips:
- Buy several stencils and tape them together to create a long enough pattern for each panel. This will speed up the painting process and make the stencil pattern more accurate.
- Use Krylon Leafing Pens to add depth to your pattern by lining the stencil..
- Hold can directly over the stencil when spraying, as opposed to at an angle. This will keep paint from sneaking under the seams and give a crisper line. If any pattern is “soft” or blurred, simply re-tape and touch up by spraying again.
- Label unused paint as “umbrella color” and store. This way you can freshen up your umbrella when needed.
