Chunky Baby Hoodie
Create a cozy sweater for the little one with alternating thick and thin stripes and a warm hood. This free baby sweater knitting pattern from Patons is great for baby shower gifts.
Materials:
- Yarn: Patons® Beehive Baby Chunky (100 g/3.5 oz) Sizes 3 (6-12-18) mos
Main Color (MC) (76421 Plusher Pink) 1 (1-1-2) ball(s)
Contrast A (76424 Rapid Rose) 1 (1-1-2) ball(s)
Contrast B (76435 Plumper Peach) 1 (1-1-2) ball(s)
Contrast C (76201 Swifter Sea) 1 (1-1-1) ball
- Knitting Needles: Sizes 5.5 mm (U.S. 9) and 6 mm (U.S. 10) knitting needles. Size 5.5 mm (U.S. 9) circular knitting needle 24 ins [60 cm] long or size needed to obtain gauge
- 2 st holders
Sizes: To fit chest measurement: 3 (6-12-18) mos, 16 (17-18-20) ins [40.5 (43-45.5-51) cm]. Finished chest 19 (20-22-24) ins [48 (51-56- 61) cm]
Gauge: 15 sts and 20 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

Stripe Pat
With C, work 2 rows stocking st.
With B, work 4 rows stocking st.
With C, work 2 rows stocking st.
With MC, work 4 rows stocking st.
With C, work 2 rows stocking st.
With A, work 4 rows stocking st.
These 18 rows form Stripe pat.
BACK
**With smaller needles, cast on 33 (35-39-43) sts.
Knit 5 rows (garter st) inc 2 sts evenly across last row. 35 (37-41-45) sts.
Change to larger needles and proceed in Stripe Pat until work from beg measures 6 (7½-7½-9) ins [15 (19-19-23) cm], ending with a purl row.
Shape armholes: Cast off 2 (2-3-3) sts beg next 2 rows. 31 (33-35-39) sts rem.**
Cont even in pat until armhole measures 5 (5½- 5¾-6) ins [12.5 (14-14.5-15) cm], ending with a purl row.
Shoulders: Cast off 6 (7-7-9) sts beg next 2 rows.
Leave rem 19 (19-21-21) sts on a st holder.
FRONT
Work from ** to ** as for Back.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures 2¼ (2¾- 2¾-3) ins [5.5 (7-7-7.5) cm], ending with a purl row.
Shape neck: Next row: (RS). K11 (12-12-14). Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Next row: Purl.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 rows. 6 (7-7-9) sts rem.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures same length as Back before shoulder, ending with a purl row. Cast off.
With RS of work facing, slip next 9 (9-11-11) sts onto a st holder. Join appropriate color to rem sts and knit to end of row.
Next row: Purl.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 rows. 6 (7-7-9) sts rem.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures same length as Back before shoulder, ending with a purl row. Cast off.
SLEEVES
With smaller needles and MC, cast on 21 (21-22- 23) sts. Knit 5 rows, inc 2 sts evenly across last row. 23 (23-25-25) sts.
Change to larger needles and proceed in Stripe Pat, inc 1 st each end of needle on 3rd row and every following 4th row to 37 (39-43-45) sts. Cont even for 5 (5½-6½-7¼) ins [11.5 (14-16.5-18.5) cm] total length, ending with a purl row. Place markers at each end of last row.
Work 4 (4-6-6) rows even in pat. Cast off.
FINISHING
Pin garment pieces to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth, leaving cloth to dry.
Sew shoulder seams.
Hood: With RS facing, C and circular needle, K9 (9-11-11) from right front st holder. Pick up and knit 15 (15-16-16) sts up right front neck edge.
K19 (19-21-21) from back st holder. Pick up and knit 15 (15-16-16) sts down left front neck edge.
Cast on 9 (9-11-11) sts. 67 (67-75-75) sts.
Next row: (WS). P33 (33-37-37). Place marker on next st. Purl to end of row.
Proceed in Stripe Pat as follows:
1st row: Knit to marked st. M1. K1. M1. Knit to end of row.
2nd row: K5. Purl to last 5 sts. K5.
3rd row: Knit.
4th to 7th rows: As 2nd and 3rd rows twice.
8th row: As 2nd row.
Rep last 8 rows 3 (3-4-4) times more. 75 (75-85- 85) sts.
Cont even in pat until hood from pick up row measures 8 (8½-8¾-9) ins [20.5 (21.5-23-23) cm], ending with a purl row. Cast off.
Fold hood in half. Sew top seam.
Sew in sleeves, placing rows above markers along cast off sts of front and back armholes to form square armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew cast on edge of hood along front neck edge overlapping right side over left side.
