I have been looking for a knitting pattern similar to this for a while now, but the knitting board isn't cheap...does anybody have a version done with knitting needles that is similar to this?

I believe a knitting board is a board with a row of pegs or nails that the yarn is cast on and a crochet hook is used to work the stitches off -- almost like spool knitting to make I-cords. You could probably also use a knitting machine or knit with needles once you figure out the guage -- looks to be about 2.3 sts per inch to get the widthheight required. Just knit a swatch in the bulky yarn to determing the correct needle size needed.
