Welt Pattern Hat
By alternating knit and purl rounds with 2 coordinating colors of neutral yarn, you create a lovely knit hat with a striped welt pattern. Use this fun hat knitting pattern to create holiday gifts or keep warm this winter.
Materials:
- Yarn: RED HEART® “Eco-Cotton™ Blend”: 1 skein each 1340 Almond A and 1373 Linen Marl B.
- Knitting Needles: 5mm [US 8] circular and double-pointed needles.
- Stitch markers
- Yarn needle
Size: Small (Medium): Head Circumference: 18 (21)”
Gauge: 17 sts = 4”; 28 rows = 4” in Striped Welt Pattern
Note: Hat is worked in rounds on circular needle. Change to double pointed needles as is necessary.
Pattern Stitch:
Striped Welt Pattern
Round 1: With B, knit.
Rounds 2-4: With B, purl.
Rounds 5-6: With A, knit.
Repeat Rounds 1-6 for pattern.
Instructions:
With A, cast on 76 (86) sts. Join to work in rounds, being careful not to twist sts. Place a marker for beginning of round.
Round 1: *K1, p1; repeat from * around.
Repeat Round 1 until ribbing measures 11/2”.
Knit 1 round, inc 2 (4) sts evenly spaced – 78 (90) sts.
Beginning with Round 1, work in Striped Welt Pattern until piece measures 5 (51/2)” from beginning, end with Round 4 of pattern.
Shape Crown
Next Round: With A, *k4, k2tog; repeat from * around – 65 (75) sts.
Work 2 rounds Striped Welt Pattern.
Next Round: With B, *p3, p2tog; repeat from * around – 52 (60) sts.
Work 2 rounds Striped Welt Pattern.
Next Round: With A, *k2, k2tog; repeat from * around – 39 (45) sts.
Next Round: With A, *k1, k2tog; repeat from * around – 26 (30) sts.
Next Round: With A, *k2tog; repeat from * around – 13
(15) sts.
Last Round: With B, p1, [p2tog] around.
Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts, pull tight and knot to secure.
Finshing: Weave in ends.
