Now, this is not your everyday scarf. Garter stitch, sure that’s easy. Intarsia? If you’ve been knitting in order, you have that down. But what makes it extra special? The loop stitch! The loop stitch adds some extra texture to this wooly beast of a scarf.

I suggest using contrasting colors to really make this scarf pop. A bold palette mixed with its funky texture will be sure to stop some folks on the street! This scarf isn’t for the shy!

Materials List

Wool and the Gang Crazy Sexy Wool (7 ounces [200 g], 87 yards [80 m] 100% wool): 2 balls Duck Egg Blue (Color A), 2 balls Red Ochre (Color B)
US 19 (15-mm) straight or circular needles, or size needed to obtain correct gauge
Darning needle or crochet hook for weaving in ends

Gauge
In garter st, 6 sts and 12 rows = 4 inches (10 cm). This pattern is not overly dependent on gauge.

Finished Measurements
10 x 81 inches (25 x 206 cm)

Designer Note:

For the even rows in this pattern, match the color to the previous row. For example, if the previous row said k9 in Color A and k6 in Color B, the following row would be k6 in Color B and then k9 in Color A.

Now let’s get knitting!

Using Color A, CO 12 sts.
Rows 1–6: K across using Color A.

Stair Step Section 1

Row 7: Join Color B by tying a loose knot, leaving a 4-inch (10-cm) tail to weave in later. K3 with Color B, k9 with Color A.
Rows 8–12: K across, using the same color for each st as the previous row and using the intarsia technique when changing colors.
Row 13: Using Color B, k6, k6 with Color A.
Rows 14–18: K across, using the same colors as before.
Row 19: Using Color B, k9, k3 with Color A.
Rows 20–24: K across, using the same colors as before.
Cut Color A.
Rows 25–30: K across using Color B.

Stair Step Section 2

Row 31: Attach Color A. With Color A, k3 loop sts, k9 with Color B.
Rows 32–36: K across, using the same color for each st as the previous row and using the the intarsia technique when changing colors. Note that the loop stitches are only for Row 31. Knit regular knit stitches for rows 32–36.
Row 37: Using Color A, k3, k3 loop sts, with Color B, k6.
Rows 38–42: K across, using the same color for each st as the previous row and using the the intarsia technique when changing colors.
Row 43: Using Color A, k6, k3 loop sts, with Color B, k3.
Rows 44–48: K across, using the same colors as before.
Cut Color B.
Rows 49: Using Color A, k9, k3 loop sts.
Rows 50–54: K across using Color A.
Rows 55–198: Rep Stair Step Sections 1 and 2 three more times. (You will have four sections with loops.)
Rows 199–222: Rep Stair Step Section 1 one more time.
