Mother Henna Video: heART Journal Part 3

In part 3, Kara L.C. Jones of Mother Henna demonstrates how to continue to build up color and layers on your heart journal. She shows how to prep each page for the main imagery.

Heart Journal

Materials

  • plain old paper, wire-bound journal
  • gesso
  • soft-medium acrylic gel
  • acrylic paints
  • watercolor
  • ephemera
  • paint brush
  • watercolor pencils
  • ink and skewer
  • india ink pens
  • hand-carved stamps
  • bubblewrap
  • toothpaste tube cap, paint tube cap
  • star and heart stencils
  • corks and bottle tops
  • stamp pads including distress ink
  • sharpie pens

Additional Instructions

  • This is the time to start thinking about the shape you want your final pages to take.  I'm working with circles/mandala ideas here, but you might want to use a different shape or use askew portions of the page to host your main imagery.
  • Again, don't be afraid to use the white Gesso along the way.  As you are building up textures and layers, you may work your way into a corner and not like what you see.  Gesso over it.  Try again.
  • You can make your own stencils by paper punching patterns into card stock and sponging your ink thru to the page.
  • Try using a rough paper towel or some crumpled up wax paper as you Gesso.  Wipe or dab with the crumpled area and what patterns emerge, bright colors from underneath show through.  You never know what you'll get!
  • Keep in mind this is all a playful experiment!  You don't have to know the "right" way -- just play!  Find YOUR way.
