Tips for Needleturn Applique
- Freezer paper can be used to do applique. Trace out the shape on freezer paper and iron the wax side to the fabric. Cut around the shape, taking into account the seam allowance. Use spray starch to stabilize the piece.
- A toothpicks works wonders to turn the fabric when doing needleturn applique. The heavy toothpicks also work well to tuck in spots when doing applique.
- You don't have to pin when doing needleturn applique. Spray adhesive glue into a small bowl and use a Q-tip to apply the glue to the turned under edges of fabric. They will stay without pinning.
- If you insist on using pins, pin from the back to reduce snags in the fabric.
- If you are right-handed, hold the applique down with your left hand and applique counter-clockwise. Do the reverse if you are left-handed.

The freezer paper is ironed to the wrong side of the applique fabric. This acts as a form to turn the seam allowance under. I like to iron the seam allowance around the freezer paper before sewing the piece down. Leave a small section of the applique piece unsewn and pull the freezer paper out then finish sewing it down. This works very well for me.

that's my question also. after you cut out the pattern with the 14 " seam allowance to turn under what happens to the freezer paper. Is it that you iron it on the top and fold under the quater inch to the edge of the paper OR do you iron it on the wrong side and then fold the fabric toward the freezer paper and sew into the freezer paper? ???????

Do you place the freezer paper on the right or wrong side of the applique fabric?

I iron the freezer paper on the right side of the fabric. I trim around the paper so there is barely a quarter of an inch around. I use spray adhesive to adhere the applique to the fabric. The freezer paper shows me where to turn under. I use a tooth pick to help turn under the edge. I do not adhere the freezer paper to the back of the applique because I do not like to have to cut the back of the fabrics to remove the appliques, as some people do.
