Materials:
- Tablet
- Measuring tape
- Fabric
- Flannel
- Gathered lace trim - 1-1/4" to 2-1/2" wide scraps
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Needle and thread
- Button
Instructions:
-
Using a measuring tape, measure around the width of your tablet and add 1 inch. Measure around the length, add 1 inch and divide in half. Use these measurements to cut a fabric rectangle for the outside of the case and a flannel rectangle for the lining. Cut two 2-inch wide by 3-inch long fabric rectangles for the tab closure.
-
Lay the fabric rectangle on your work surface with the long edges running horizontal. Using the measurement of the long edge, cut a scrap of 1 1/4-inch to 2 1/2-inch wide gathered lace trim. Pin the lace across the length with the bottom edge of the lace 1/2 inch above the rectangle's bottom edge. Top stitch the gathered edge of the lace to the fabric.
-
Cut another scrap of gathered lace trim using the same measurement. It does not need to be the same width as the previous lace. Pin the lace to the fabric rectangle with the bottom edge of the lace overlapping 1/2 inch over the previous lace. Top stitch the lace to the fabric.
-
Repeat with additional rows of lace until the last row is approximately 2 inches from the top edge of the fabric.
-
Fold the fabric rectangle in half with the right sides together and the short edges matching. Pin the short edges together. Sew the pinned edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. You now have a tube.
-
Flatten the tube with the seam centered on the side facing up. This is the back. Pin the flattened bottom edge of the tube. Sew using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
-
Repeat steps 5 and 6 with the flannel lining rectangle. Leave a 3-inch opening in the center of the flattened bottom edge.
-
Place the two tab rectangles together with the right sides facing and pin. Sew the two long edges and one short edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Turn the tab right side out and press.
-
Turn the fabric lace case right side out. Lay the tab on the back seam of the case. Line up the raw edge of the tab with the top edge of the case and pin.
-
Insert the right-side-out case inside the wrong-side-out lining case. Match up the seams and the top edge. Pin around the top. Sew the pinned edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Turn the case right side out through the opening in the lining. Hand sew the opening closed. Press the case.
-
Choose a button for your closure. Sew a buttonhole on the tab 1/2 inch from the end.
- Insert your tablet into the case. Fold the tab over the opening to the front of the case. Using a pen, mark a dot on the front of the case through the buttonhole. Remove the tablet. Hand sew your button over the marked dot.
