How to Make a Scarf Out of Fabric

Tips for the Lovely Lace Statement Scarf:

Choose a lace that has defined motif edges because this allows for you to cut away any excess fabric without unraveling your design.A great example is crocheted lace which is used in this tutorial. A cheap way to get expensive lace is going to a thrift store and buying an old lace top or a shirt with lace detailing! Remember, the less stretch in the lace the better!
If your scarf frays easily, then invest in a bottle of Fray Check and apply it to the edges when finished with this project (See Step 11). It will keep your scarf from ripping and secure the fibers in place for any wear and tear.
Always press after every seam you sew because it takes away any unnecessary bulk and tension.

Directions

Cut out of your scarf fabric a rectangle 58 inches by 16 inches.
Fold your rectangle length wise with right sides facing each other. On the wrong side stitch all the way down your rectangle at a half inch to make a long tube.
Now flip this tube inside out! Press the seam flat and put to the side.
Cut one lace triangle; length A and B as 18 inches, and width C as 7 inches. Also, Cut 2 four inch squares out of the lace.
Fold your scarf in half. Mark the fold with a pin, this is your center, Place the two lace squares 2 inches each away from the center line and 3 inches in from both edges of the scarf. Pin in place.
Look at your lace pieces and determine if you want to change your motif designs. If so, mark around your motifs with an invisible ink fabric pen. Remember to keep the excess lace on, this will help stabilize the motif while you sew it onto your scarf.
Lay your scarf out in a tear drop shape so that only the inner corners of each end are over lapping by a half inch, pin in place.
Place your lace motif on top of your scarf, just below where the two corners overlap. Make sure that the lace is over lapping on top of the scarf, so we can sew it in place! Pin in place.
Take your scarf to the sewing machine and sew over the outer edge of your desired motif design.
Cut away any excess lace and fabric from your motif up to the zig-zag stitch with your small pair of scissors.
