How to Use Chalk Paint to Create a Bohemian Inspired Piece of Furniture

From the Designer: "I took an aged and water damaged end table and transformed it into a Bohomenian masterpiece using Plaid Folk Art Chalk Paint. I started with Vintage Victorian and added in some hot pink...mixed the Cascade and Nautical (blues) together and randomly painted areas on the table. I also used a squirt bottle to make drips and splats of paint. Mixing colors and a squirt bottle gave new life into a piece of furniture destined for the junk pile."

Materials List

  • Vintage Victorian Folk Art Home Decor Chalk Paint
  • Nautical Folk Art Home Decor Chalk Paint
  • Cascade Folk Art Home Decor Chalk Paint
  • Folk Art Home Decor Chalk Clear Wax
  • Minwax Polyacrylic Spray
  • Folk Art Hot Pink Acrylic Paint
  • Professional Wax Brush
  • Chalk Paint Brush

Instructions

  1. Clean your piece of furniture with simple green or a similar product.

  2. I used Vintage Victorian as a base coat.

  3. I then mixed in a little hotter pink color to the Vintage Victorian color to make a little more Bohemian. Wait 2 hours.

  4. I then added Cascade and Nautical (blues) mixed together and randomly painted areas on the table.

  5. Use a squirt bottle to make drips and splats of paint.

  6. Be careful not to add too much water because it can pull up your base coat. I think to wait the 2 hours between the base coat and this step helped.

  7. I then added drips to the inside of the end table.

  8. I let it dry overnight before I added the clear wax.

  9. I opted for Polyacrylic spray on the top instead of wax because it is a table and will be high traffic. You should use a polyacrylic spray or even resin on any high traffic areas to resist scratches.

NotesOne thing I learned is you can wax over polyacrylic but never polyacrylic over wax!

This is a great way to add new life to dull or otherwise unwanted pieces of furniture. If you have been wanting to redo some pieces but didn't want the hassle of stripping paint- this is the solution- chalk paint!
