Fun Stripes Sweater and Hat
This cardigan and hat set from Patons is absolutely adorable. The thick and thin colorful stripes make it unique from the everyday sweater!

CARDIGAN
BACK
With MC and smaller needles cast on 57 (65-69-77) sts.
1st row: (RS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep these 2 rows (K1. P1) ribbing for 1 inch [2.5 cm] ending on a 2nd row and inc 2 (0-2-0) st(s) evenly across last row. 59 (65-71-77) sts.
Change to larger needles and proceed in stocking st until work from beg measures 3½ (4¼-5¾-7) ins [9 (11-14.5-18) cm] ending with RS facing for next row.
Armhole shaping: Cast off 5 sts beg next 2 rows. 49 (55-61-67) sts.
Cont even in stocking st until work from beg measures 8 (9¾-11½-13) ins [20.5 (25-29-33) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Shoulder shaping: Cast off 15 (16-19-22) sts beg next 2 rows. Leave rem 19 (23-23-23) sts on a st holder.
LEFT FRONT
**With MC and smaller needles cast on 29 (29-33-37) sts.
Work 1 inch [2.5 cm] in (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Back ending on a 2nd row and inc 0 (2-2-2) sts evenly across last row. 29 (31-35-39) sts.**
Change to larger needles and proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). With B, knit.
2nd row: Purl.
3rd and 4th rows: With MC, as 1st and 2nd rows.

Change to larger needles and proceed in stocking st inc 1 st each end of needle on 3rd and every alt row to 52 (52-48-50) sts, then every 4th row until there are 56 (60-64-66) sts.
Cont even in stocking st until work from beg measures 6 (7¼-8¾-9½) ins [15 (18.5-22-24) cm] ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off.
Place markers ¾ in [2 cm] down from cast off edge at each side of Sleeve.
LEFT SLEEVE
Left Sleeve Pattern
1st row: (RS). With B, knit.
2nd row: With B, purl.
3rd to 12th rows: As 1st and 2nd rows 5 times.
13th row: With MC, knit.
14th row: With MC, purl.
15th to 24th rows: As 13th and 14th rows 5 times.
25th row: With A, knit.

FINISHING
Pin garment pieces to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth leaving to dry. Sew shoulder seams.
Neckband: With RS of work facing, MC and smaller needles, K4 (4-5-6) from right front safety pin.
Pick up and knit 10 (11-11-12) sts up right front neck edge. K19 (23-23-23) from back st holder.
Pick up and knit 10 (11-11-12) sts down left front neck edge. K4 (4-5-6) from left front safety pin. 47 (53-55-59) sts.
Beg and ending on a 2nd row work 1 inch [2.5 cm] in (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Back. Cast off in ribbing.
Button Band: With MC and smaller needles, cast on 9 sts.
1st row: (RS). K2. (P1. K1) 3 times. K1.
2nd row: (K1. P1) 4 times. K1. Rep last 2 rows until band, when slightly stretched, fits up left front for Her or right front for Him, sewing in place as you work and ending with right side facing for next row. Cast off in ribbing.
Mark positions for 4 (4-5-5) buttons on this band having bottom button ½ inch [1 cm] up from cast on edge and top button ½ inch [1 cm] below cast off edge of neckband and rem buttons spaced evenly between.
Buttonhole Band: Work as given for Button Band working buttonholes to correspond to button markers as follows:
Her Version only: 1st row: (RS). Rib 3 sts. Cast off 2 sts. Rib to end of row.
His Version only: 1st row: (RS). Rib 4 sts. Cast off 2 sts. Rib to end of row.
Both Versions: 2nd row: Rib, casting on 2 sts over cast off sts.
Sew in Sleeves placing rows above markers along cast off sts at ar mholes of Fronts and Back to for m square ar mholes. Sew side and Sleeve seams.
HAT
With MC and smaller needles cast on 79 (83-87-91) sts and work 2 ins [5 cm] in (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Back of Cardigan, ending on a 2nd row and inc 3 (4-0-1) st(s) evenly across last row. 82 (87-87-92) sts.
Change to larger needles and work f rom *** to *** as given for Right Front of Cardigan.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures 5½ (6½-7-7½) ins [14 (16.5-18-19) cm] ending with RS facing for next row.
Keeping cont of pat, proceed as follows:
Shape top: 1st row: K1. *K2tog. K14 (15-15-16). Rep from * to last st. K1. 77 (82-82-87) sts.
2nd row: P1. *P13 (14-14-15). P2tog. Rep from * to last st. P1. 72 (77-77-82) sts.
3rd row: K1. *K2tog. K12 (13-13-14). Rep from * to last st. K1. 67 (72-72-77) sts.
4th row: P1. *P11 (12-12-13). P2tog. Rep from * to end of row. 62 (67-67-72) sts.
Cont in pat, dec 5 sts each row, as before, until there are 12 (12-17-17) sts.
Break yarn leaving a long end. Thread yarn through rem sts. Fasten securely.
Sew back seam reversing seam for turn back.
Ties with earflaps: (make 2).
With larger needles and MC cast on 6 (6-8-8) sts.
1st row: (RS). K2. (P1. K1) 2 (2-3-3) times.
2nd row: K1. (P1. K1) 2 (2-3-3) times. K1.
Rep last 2 rows for 10 (10-11-11) ins [25.5 (25.5-28-28) cm] ending with RS facing for next row.
Earflap shaping: 1st row: Inc 1 st in first st knitways. Rib to last 2 sts. Inc 1 st in next st knitways. K1. 8 (8-10-10) sts.
2nd row: P1. Rib to last st. P1.
Rep last 2 rows until there are 20 (20-22-22) sts.
Cont even in ribbing for 8 rows.
Cast off in ribbing.
Place markers on last row of ribbing of Hat 2 ins [5 cm] at each side of centre back seam. Sew earflaps to inside of Hat along last row of ribbing beg at markers. Sew pom-pon to top of Hat.
Make pom-pom: Wind 4 strands of MC, 1 strand of A, and 1 strand of B around 3 fingers approx 15 times. Remove from fingers and tie tightly in centre. Cut through each side of loops. Trim to a smooth round shape.
