Little Girl Tu Tu Tutorial
How adorable will your daughter look in this little skirt from Jamielyn Nye? Let the Tu Tu Tutorial show you how to create this one of a kind Tu Tu. She will be the hit of the party in this super cute sewing project.
Materials:
- Elastic Band (1/2in - 1in)
- Tulle
- Ribbon
Instructions:
- First you’ll need to start out with an elastic band (1/2 in – 1 in works best). These come in packs at Jo-Ann’s for about $2. Measure your child’s waist and cut the piece of elastic 1 in bigger. Then you will sew the ends together.
- Next you’ll cut your tulle (use the kind on spools-found mine at HL). I cut mine 18 inches for a 3 month old. Decide how long or short you want yours and measure accordingly.
- Next you’ll tie a double knot around the elastic. I did a pattern of white-pink-white polka dot- pink – white and so on until I got all the way around. You can get creative here and do as many colors as you’d like…however I prefer to stick to 2-3 colors. Also make sure to slide the knots real close together to get the puffy tu-tu.
- I wanted to add just a little bit of ribbon, so I tied a thin piece of ribbon next to the polka dot tulle. So it ended up being about a 5-1 ratio or tulle to ribbon. Again get creative here. Big fat ribbon looks super cute as well.

This is adorable. I don't really sew much and generally by hand when I do. Even I can do this. It would be so cute for an Easter outfit for when my one-year-old granddaughter joins her cousins for an egg hunt. I actually have tulle left here from a baby shower held before she was born. I can recycle the material and have something cute for her. I'm kind of excited about this.

You might want to attach the tulle and ribbon as if attaching fringe on an afghan. It has a very neat appearance.

I am uncertain as to how to make a "double knot" when attaching the tulle to the elastic. Are you actually doubling the tulle as you attach it to the elastic (because it is on the front and the back sides of the elastic), or is the length after knotting the tulle on the elastic a single thickness?

In my experience, elastic stretches and so you need to actually cut the elastic smaller than the child's waist, or the tutu is going to fall off. A lot. I've had to take in the elastic quite a bit when making tutus for my daughter, and for the fairy costumes I sell. HTH.

I think we are being told to cut each piece of the tulle long enough that we can tie it on to the elastic, Then we line the tulle pieces up till the tutu has the fullness we want. At least that's how I plan to approach it. I agree that the directions could have been clearer.
