This Easy Breezy Skirt is great for all kinds of fabrics.  Stretch knits work best, but you can use whatever fabric you'd like for this casual skirt!  Patterns are easy to follow and include step by step photos.

Materials:

  • Knit fabric - 45" wide (1-1/4 yard)
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine

Instructions:

Given Measurements (alter as necessary):

  • Waist/hip: 32"
  • Length: 21"

  1. Take your waist/hip (depends on where you want the skirt to stay) measurement.  Let it be X (for us it was 32").

  2. Cut 6 pieces of fabric.  For each piece, the top part should be X/6 + 1/2" (for seam allowance).  Bottom should be 2*(X/6) + 1/4 + 1/4" (seam allowance on both sides).

  3. Cut another piece for band.  If you're using stretch fabric, cut waist band: 4" + 1/2" width by length (just make it few inches shorter than your waist size depending on the stretch of the fabric).  If you're using non stretch fabric: cut 4" + 1/2" wide * X +1/2" length for waist band.

  4. Now sew the 6 pieces together with right side facing in.  Also once you are done with sewing the 6 pieces together, just check to see if the measurement on top of the skirt that is formed now is X" long.

  5. Next sew along the waist band and hem the bottom.

Note:

  • This is yoga-style waistband. You do not need any elastic or a zipper.

  • To cut a piece of fabric that fits your waist, subtract few inches from your actual waist measurement. Wrap the knit around your waist if you are not sure how well it fits. For very stretchy fabric, you have to subtract around 5-6 inches from your actual waist measurement.

I will make this panel skirt with fat quarters from my collection. I love this particular fashion for skirts.

I think it is kind of sad that, after initial publication nearly 3 years ago, there were multiple serious questions about how to finish the skirt and yet the same instructions were simply reposted instead of edited to answer very reasonable questions. Some people who are not experienced at sewing may have embarked on this because it looks simple and doesn't require a zipper. Even stretch knits could have significant difficulty getting over hips. There is also no real instruction on finishing the waist.

Hi Maureen, Thanks for your comment. I have contacted the pattern designer with your question and the questions below. As soon as I receive modified instructions, I will update the pattern. Thanks for your patience!

Woven, non-stretch=zipper. OR.... The original instructions state that the top measurement should be the hips. I'm thinking there should be elastic in the waistband after folding it over to fit the waist. I've made skirts similar to, so to me it appears there are a few steps missing.

I'm sorry to hear of your trouble. Here are two options: 1. You can contact the pattern designer directly for help. The designer is specified in the byline. 2. I might also suggest that you try posting your question to our sites Facebook page. It is monitored by the editor and is a great resource for helpful tips and suggestions from our Facebook friends; perhaps they can offer some guidance! No one gave an answer as to how to get into the skirt when finished. Is there a zipper to be inserted?

all you need to do if your using a fabric that dosent streach is devide the hip measurement by 6 than add 1/2 in on ether side. normaly for a pattern with repeating pcs i use 1 card board cut out then reuse it over and over, much simpler dont you think

X= your waist measurement, or hip if you're making the skirt to sit there. To make the skirt panels you have to divide that number by 6 and then add a seam allowance. However, as someone else has pointed out, unless you're using a stretch fabric, there's no way of wearing the skirt. I suggest you cut the pieces out in paper, pin them together and then you can see for yourself what the fit would be like. Then you can decide how to customize it since it would be very easy to add a zipper or even an elastic waist.

Really cute skirt, but if you are making it out of woven fabric how are you getting into it? Is there a zipper or button?

I have a question. In step 2 Cut 6 pieces of fabric. For each piece, the top part should be X/6 + 1/2" (for seam allowance). Bottom should be 2*(X/6) + 1/4 + 1/4" (seam allowance on both sides). Is that 2 times X divided by 6 plus a half inch total? Meaning your measurement divided by 6 times 2?
