This is a must-have for every little girl. This free easy sewing pattern uses beautiful fabrics and basic techniques to create a fantastic tiered skirt that your little girl will love.
Materials:
-
Fabric
- Yardage varies: the least you would need is ½ yard. More for longer skirt.
- Scissors
- Elastic
- Serger
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Cutting mat
- Ruler
- Rotary cutter
Instructions:
-
Choose 2-4 different kinds of coordinating fabric.
-
Cut them in strips from selvage to selvage of various widths, depending how long I want the skirt to be, usually for little sizes like 3-4 I use 3 strips about 4” wide.
-
Take two of the strips and lay them good side to good side and pin them down the middle. Surge them together and repeat this process with the other strips until they are all sewn to each other.
-
Between steps, iron fabric strips as you sew them together.
-
Take the selvage ends good to good and sew them together. By now it is starting to resemble a skirt.
-
Trim both ends with a rotary cutter to be sure they are even.
-
After deciding which fabric you want to be the top of the skirt, fold over and iron about 1” twice so no raw edges are showing and do the same with the bottom.
-
Sew (with a traditional machine, do not surge) around the top leaving an opening for the elastic, and do the same to the bottom with no opening.
-
Choose the width of your elastic, I like to use ½”, the length will be determined by the size of skirt you want to make, for instance for size 3-4 I use 18” and then increase a ½” for each size above that, now put it through the top and sew the ends of the elastic together and close the opening in the waist band.
- Turn right side out and your skirt is done!

I have made 2 girls tiered skirts so far for my granddaughter and she loves them. It takes no time at all. I did mine a little different by making 1st cut 1 1/2 times waist measurement ,2nd 2 times waist measurement and 3rd tier just 3 times waist measurement or a little under. I do length same but divide by how mant tiers wanted and how long. It makes tiers a little fuller. These are so fun to make. Will be making many more.

This is very easy to follow on sizes and strip pieces. I'm going to make up some for my grand daughter. Can' do that with the "twirl dress". Don't know anything about fabric pieces. What's the reason for that?

I am very new to sewing and so I am just learning all the jargon to go along with how to read a pattern. I have found it's much easier for me to make something out of a simple instruction with a few photographs like this skirt. I just made this skirt for my grand daughter in less than an hour and didn't make one single mistake! I can't believe that it came out of my sewing machine but it did! Keep these simple sewing patterns coming! I am having a blast! I can't wait to present this skirt to my grand daughter tomorrow. She will be tickled that her Nana made her a skirt! Thank you!

If you have a sewing machine with a zig-zag stich you do not have to have a surger. Just zig-zag as close to the edge of the seam as possible to prevent raveling.
